Page 2 The Pendulum May 1, 1980 SGA elections today With the end of school just around the corner, the students of Elon have yet another important task to fulfill before leaving school. That task is electing the president of the SGA. Will we rise to the occasion? The presidential run-off between John Sadler and Ken Whitley is being held today and tomorrow. Although Whitley and Sadler both lost in the election last year, this year has proved to be a different ball game. Sadler is running on a ticket with Norman Whittington (newly elected vice-president) and Dan Daly (newly elected treasurer). Sadler lost last year, running on a ticket with Bryant Colson. Ken Whitley is running on past experience. He has an impressive Hsting of credentials and could probably work well with anyone, as ,ould the versatile Sadler, past editor of the yearbook. The decision is yours. Who will govern you next year? If the SGA elections are not to become a farce, more than one-third of the students must vote. We should have a say in who is to be the next president of the Student Government Association. Yours could be the deciding vote. So vote today and tomorrow. It could make a big difference. i OoyjtK c^fj ,oor o^T Co,jj jjj-1 lu f'l Ofj I z. c/«c r'/c»N j OK ^ HiT-’Hefl^To ^ O Ss T^ tfTC. „ / A bugling trumpeter LETTERS TO THE EDITOR The bugling trumpeter, who took a several month vacation, is back at it again. In the middle of classes, one is sure to hear beautiful strains of the C major scale coming from an open window in the music practice rooms or from the lesson rooms. Although, admittedly, this is a nice way to break the monotany of classes, between the lawn mowers and other noise makers on campus, it is sometimes impossible to hear the professor’s voice. In one case, the professor asked all of his students to move up to the front rows of class, which might not be a bad idea. As the weather gets warmer, we need to be more considerate of those with whom we live. With windows left open at night, sound carries. The party held on the first floor could easily be heard on the third floor. Cars beeping horns late at night disturb those who are trying to sleep or study. In general, late night stereos that are blasting are sure to disturb others. The bugling trumpeter reminds us that spring is here and summer is just around the corner. Despite the fact that he has an audience of hundreds, the trumpeter forces us to either concentrate on what the teacher is saying or to go off into a fantasy land or dream world temporarily. But we are brought out of that dream world when the teacher either calls on us by name or the chimes for the next class ring. Direct complaints to SGA Editor Joy Hamilton News Editor Keith Nelson Features Robin Adams> Cartoonist Carter Crinenden Photographer' Diclde Whitmore Typist Nicole Heifetz Mitzi Taylor ^^yout Mari Behrend & Bob {Fish] Trout Composition Priscilla Crumpton Karen Carrouth Adviser Mary Ellen Priestley Published by the Conununications Media Board of E!lon College. Pounded on October 14, 1974, as the student newspaper serving the Elon College community, the Pendulum is published each Thursday during the regular terms except for examination and holiday periods. The staff meets Thursdays at 4 p.m. To the Editor: A recent letter to the Pendulum provoked me somewhat. This letter ap peared in the April 24 issue and it was written by a student who showed concern about the washing machine and dryer situation in the dormitories. This person states that the Pendulum “is the only way for students to get anyt"hing they deserve.” This statement is grossly incorrect. Has this person ever tried solving a problem by bringing it to the Student Government Association (SGA)? The SGA is an organiza tion whose sole purpose and function is to represent the concerns and needs of the students. The SGA is very successful at getting these concerns dealt with by the administration. I commend this particular student for being concerned about this situation especially in these days of so much apathy. I plan on bringing a bill concerning this problem of washing machines and dryers before the SGA senate. This bill would recommend the administration provide more washing machines and dryers to the dormitories. This bill will put added pressure on the administra tion. I recommend that al! cerns £md needs of students be dealt with by first bringing the problem to the SGA. This may be done by contacting your senator or dropping by the SGA office in Room 209 of Long Student Center. Isn’t it more logical to have an organization trying to solve a problem instead of just one individual? Thomas E. Greeh^y Junior Class President Thanks Staley is slightly steamed To the Editor: I think I speak for many when I say the girls on second Staley do not appreciate Crittenden’s cartoon depict ing the obscene phone caller calling one of us. According to the picture, we are fat, drenched in make-up, and live in curlers. I, for one, protest and I’m angry. I don’t know everyone in Staley, but I don’t see the girls look as gross as the ones in the cartoon. It makes us look terrible. And please don’t tell me I have a closed mind. If there is another way to interpret the picture, I would like to hear it from the cutest. The girls on second Staley tvorked together to stop the caller and have him arrested. Doesn’t this say something about us? We do appreciate the attention and coverage the paper gave us; however. the cartoon could have been done another way without insulting us. I believe the girls, not just on second Staley but all over campus, deserve more respect than the cartoonist gives us. I also think he owes us an apology. I would be inter ested to hear the cartoonist’s feelings and his reason for making Elon girls look bad. Tammie Ward or I don’t curl my hair. Winners of the circulation guess contest held recently by the library were Dave Stevens and Karen Winfrey. Each guessed the circulation for the week at 1,000. Actual circula tion was 1001. Dear Editor: After nearly nine months now on campus at Elon College, I feel this would be a good time to thank all people who have been particularly concerned with me during my stay in the United States. As you know, I came in September from West Ger many on a two-semester Rotary Scholarship. I was really scared for the first couple of weeks because I didn’t particularly know any thing about the USA and Elon. It is very hard to encounter a totally different lifestyle combined with a foreign language. At this point, I want to thank very much all my professors and fellow stu dents for their great helpful ness and consideration. “Ya’ll” have been a great help to me. Two semesters at Elon were a great experience and a big help for my further career. Unce again, I want to thank very much the Elon College administration and all others for their trouble.
