October 2, 1980 The Pendulum Page 5 Stern discusses Germany By Lynn Ferro During the course of his lecture on “Einstein’s Ger many” Sept. 24, Dr. Fritz Stem said, “Einstein is simi lar to a latter day Saint Francis of Assisi.” He based his comparison on Einstein’s appearance and taste, which were simple and modest. Dr. Stern, Seth Low Pro fessor of History at Colum bia University, is considered an authority on Germany, its politics, culture and his tory. He did his undergra duate work at Columbia University, during which time he met Einstein, who he later found to be his distant relative. As the lecture went on, everyone’s interest seemed to grow. Everyone who attend ed the lecture left with more insight on Einstein, Ger many’s culture, and its changes during the Einstein era. His lecture was “bril liant,” and “intriguing,” students and faculty agreed. Dr. Bruce Waller of the Philosophy Department in troduced Dr. Stem who then began the hour-and-a-half lecture. He described Ein stein’s character, beliefs, ac complishments, and his treatment by the Germans. When Einstein denounced the Hilter regime, all his books were burned, his works seized and he was exiled from Germany, Dr. Stem said. Dr. Stern has taught at Comell, Yale, two universi ties in Germany, Paris, and now at Columbia University. He has written four books on Germany’s culture, his tory, and some famous peo* pie within Germany. He is currently working under a grant from the Ford Foun dation on a book on Con- porary Europe. His stop at Elon was brief but impres sive. Frats reconsider fall rush liM distingiilshed Fritz Stern lectured on “Einstein’s Germany” iast Wednesday evening. Freshmen elect officers Freshman class officers elected Sept. 24 include: Jenius Cox, freshman class president, Beverly Bod, vice-president, and Denise Tate, secretary-treasurer. Cyndy Koger was elected sophomore class president and 3 senators were also elected. David Adams was elected senator for precinct 1, Sharon Stakiets for pre cinct 2, and Scott North- ridge for precinct 3. By Leon Proffitt, IFC reporter The present fall rush sys tem was the main topic of discussion when the Inter- fratemal council met on Sept. 17. Many fraternities feel that fall msh has become too expensive in relation to the number of bids given out. They say that because first semester freshmen may no longer accept bids to join fraternities, (a rule created out of the GrMd Charter Review), there is no longer a need for expensive msh par ties. Several alternatives to the present system are being discussed. If any fraternity aiember has a question or alternative suggestion, con tact your IFC representative. In other business, the Stu dent Union- Board (SUB) met with the IFC to discuss plans for the Fall Weekend. Chairman Jerry Hooker dis cussed several ideas with the council. Definite plans will be forthcoming. GffiSONVILLE DRUG CO., INC. ASSOCIATED INDEPENDENT DRUGGISTS A 119 E. Main St., Gibsonville, N.C.
