Eight former sports super
stars will be inducted into
the Eton College Sports Hall
of Fame as one of the high
lights in the 1980 Home
coming Weekend. The cere
mony will be held at Whitley
Auditorium on Nov. 8, at 10

E. Marlette, Sr. ’23, David

Howard L. Brigfs
While at Elon, Briggs
} headed the baseball team in
! hitting with a two year ave-
t rage of .410. He played
semi-professional baseball
: with Cone Mills (Greens
boro) in the Guilford Coun
ty League, and one year
with the independent Con
cord, N.C. team during the
summer of 1928.
Briggs moved on to pro
fessional baseball where he
played for seven years. He
played for teams in Reids-
ville and Danville and for
clubs related to the St. Louis
Cardinals organization. He
was selected to the All-Time
Professional Team at Reids-
ville, N.C. He left profes
sional baseball in 1937 with
a .323 career batting average
to pursue a career with the
American Tobacco Com
pany.
PanI F. Briggs
An outstanding baseball
pitcher and hitter, Paul
Briggs had a career batting
average of .291 with a high
.364 in 1934. In 1936 he
pitched a no-hit, no-run
game against John Hop
kins University. He also
struck out ten or more bat
ters in seven different
games. In his career he
pitched five three-hitters,
three four-hitters, one five-
hitter, and one six-hitter.
His overall career pitching
record was 46 wins and 5
losses.
Briggs played semi-profes-
sional baseball with the Mc
Crary Eagles of Asheboro,
N.C. After serving in the
armed forces, he joined the
American Tobacco Com
pany of Reidsville. He
served in the administration
division of the company for
33 years and retired in 1976.
Horace J. Hendrickson
Coaching at Elon from
the fall of 1937 until the
spring of 1942, Horace J.
“Coach” Hendrickson holds
the highest winning average
for an Elon coach in foot
ball, basketball, and base
ball. His career records arer
baseball, 68-15 overall and
53-12 in conference; basket
ball, 94-20 overaU and 53-12
in conference; football, 31-
21-1 overall and 21-5-1 in
conference.
Coach Hendrickson left
Elon College to become
backfield coaching football
and head baseball coach at
the University of Pennsyl
vania. He later worked for
the Brooklyn Dodgers, Duke
and North Carolina State
before he launched his ca
reer in his business world in
1953.
Waiter L. Hobson, Jr.
Walter L. Hobson, Jr.,
’42 was a member of the
basketball and baseball
teams, which earned him
letters for four years in each
sport. He was also a mem
ber of ITK fraternity and
was president of the student
body during his senior year.
Hobson was a 5’H”
guard and forward on the
Elon College basketball
team. He totaled 551 points
in 92 games in his four years
as a Fightin’ Christian. In
the 1942 basketball season,
he was Elon’s eighth all-
time scoring lc£d:r.
Hobson was also an Elon
all-time baseball player hold
ing the title of Elon’s fifth
all-time batting leader. One
of three Elon players to
make the USA baseball
team, Hobson left Elon to
sign a professional baseball
contract.
Wade E. Marlette, Sr.
Wade Marlette, Sr., ’23,
who died in Honda on
March 5, was a four-letter
man for four consecutive
years. He earned 17 letters
as an Elon College athlete.
The 1923 Phi Psi Cli
refers to Marlette as “one of
Elon’s most famous speed
kings. He runs the mile and
the cross country in zero
flat. He’s a natural born
artist with the baseball glove
and plays football and bas
ketball like a demon.”
He played two years of
football and basketball. He
played five years in baseball.
He ran cross-country four
seasons, and participated in
track for four years.
David A. Mondy
A letterman in three
sports at Elon College, Dav
id Mondy '52 was well
known in basketball, golf
and track.
Mondy was an outstand
ing guard who played three
seasons on the Elon College
basketball team. He scored
632 points in his career for
an average of 7.9 points per
game.
Mondy was a member of
the first golf team and won
the conference golf crown in
1949 and 1951. He also tied
the conference crown in
track in 1950 and 1952.
Joseph B. Newman
The late Joseph Newman,
’21, was a member of the
footbaU, baseball and track
teams.
He lettered two seasons in
football playing halfback
and quarterback, lettered
four years in basketball scor
ing over 200 points, (which
was especially good since
scoring was low during his
playing years), and he also
earned three letters in base
ball playing first, second,
and third base, and also
shortstop.
After graduating from
Elon, Newman received his
D.D.S. from Emory Uni
versity Dental School.
