May The Elon College football team is presently holding a 7-1 overall record and a 3-1 conference record as they enter into this weeks Home coming game with Newber ry. Behind the outstanding play of runningbacks Bobby Hedrick and Fred Jordan, and QB John Bangley the Fightin’ Christians have put a total of 234 points on the scoreboard in eight games, for an average of 29.3 points per game. In the opening game of the season RB Bobby Hed rick rushed for 102 yards and two TDs as Elon de feated Winston-Salem State 27-22. The next week against Mars Hill, Elon was held to 30 yards total offense while the Lions racked up 238 on the ground and 2 in the air and defeated Elon 23-11. Elon put the loss to Mars Hill behind them and went into their first home game against Delta State with a lot of confidence. Bobby Hed rick rushed for IS? yards, Fred Jordan a 121 and the Fightin’ Christians slipped by Delta State 24-21. In the fourth game, against N.C. Central, QB John Bangley completed 9 of 18 passes for 141 yards and 1 TD as Elon defeated Central 28-14. The win lifted Elon’s record to 3-1. Elon’s next home game against Norfolk State was a complete blow out. Bobby Hedrick rushed for 134 yards and three TDs while Vernon Morrison added 117 yards and two TDs as Elon romped to 65-26 victory. Elon’s game against Pres byterian was regarded as one of the top games of the season. Presbyterian was pre-season picked number one and Elon number two in the SAC-8. Bobby Hedrick rushed for 112 yards and 2 TDs and the Elon defense held the Blue Hose to only 196 yards total offense and Elon defeated Presbyterian 28-16. ft, For the next game Elon traveled to Salisbury, N.C., to take on the Catawba Indians. With the Indians keying on Hedrick, fresh man RB Fred Jordan rushed for 117 on 10 carries and QB John Bangley hit on 12 of 24 passes for 140 yards and the Fightin’ Christian* defeated Catawba, in a come-from-behind victory, 14-10. In the eighth game of the season, against Gardner- Webb, WE Steve Vargas caught 7 passes for 86 yards and 2 TDs while Bobby Hedrick rushed for 149 yards and Elon bombed Gardner-Webb 37-3. Elon is at home this week against Newberry. On Nov. 15 they travel to Lenoir- Rhyne and on Nov. 22 they come back home to face Carson-Newman in the final regular season game of the year.
