Photo by Evan Sctnr. By Vicki Blankenship For all the fans that came home to Elon for the 1980 Homecoming Weekend, the Saturday afternoon football game was an unforgetable event. For more recent alumni, it was a time to refresh memories on just how well senior runningback Bobby Hedrick can perform. Bobby Hedrick banged, hurdled, and bounced around in a style all his own, to perform 188 yards rushing on 26 carries. But the 188 yards meant more than a good day’s running; it meant a record broken by this outstanding Elon athlete. Hedrick was rewarded with the NAIA career rushing record formerly held by Jer ry Linton of Panhandle State, Oklahoma, 1959-62. The old mark of 4,839 yards was broken by He drick with 13:58 remaining in the game. Hedrick’s career yards stand at 4,847 with two games remaining on the schedule. At halftime the 6-foot, 177-pound senior had rushed for 108 yards. The excite ment of the crowd, wonder ing if he could gain 73 more yards to break the record, grew louder and louder. With every run, Hedrick grew closer and the crowd began rising from their seats more often. When the an nouncement was made over the loudspeaker that Hedrick had just broken the record. all 5,500 fans stood and applauded ecstatically, pay ing tribute to their great All American runningback. Hedrick held the football in the air and waved it to the crowd as he trotted to the sidelines to share his glory with his teammates and coaches. Hedrick gives credit to “good blocldng, team spirit and the man upstairs” for his success. Hedrick, along with teammates, is looking forward to getting a berth in the nationals.
