spectators thought Catawba
had a sure victory. With two
minutes remaining in the
game Elon hustled to bring
the game within 3 points.
Drew Van Horn missed a 22
footer with 1:30 to go. A
Catawba player capitalized
on the turnover with a dunk
to give the Braves a five
point spread. That particular
shot determined the victory.
Lee Allison fired in 20
points and made 4 of 5 free
throws. For more offensive
punch, Clarence Miles, the
former East Carolina pro-
duct added 18 points. Greg
Dawson, a usual scorer in
double figures, was in a
shooting slump in tMfc 68-61
defeat.

Golden Girls sport 10-1 record
by Yield Blankenship
With a 7-0 record and the
winners of the H&R Block
Invitational Tournament, the
Golden Girls coached by
Mary Jackson, resumed ac
tion after their Christmas
break on Jan. 12, against
High Point College.
The Golden Girls faced a
tough match up with the
Lady Panthers that turned
out to be the first game lost
by the women cagers.
At the halfway mark, the
Golden Girls trailed 45-36.
Teresa Holt of the Lady
Panthers was credited with
most of Elon’s problems.
She led High Point at half
time with 14 points and
ended the game with a total
of 22 points.
Elon’s Nuggie Dixon
found her hot hand in the
second half. She began hit
ting an outside shot from 20
or more feet out and totaled
27 of Elon’s 71 points.
In the last few minutes of
the game the Golden Girls
started to out score High
Point and pulled within
three points of having a vic
tory, but with time miming
out and only 50 seconds on
the clock, it became a foul
and hope effort by Elon that
the Lady Panthers would
miss their foul shots. The
final score was 79-71.
The Golden Girls retal-
liated with three wins later
in the week when they faced
Catawba, 104-47, Guilford,
62-48, and Pfeiffer, 93-72.
Elon gained control at the
opening of all three games
and never let go as they built
onto their score. Coach
Mary Jackson’s cagers con
trolled the boards and broke
away on fast breaks one
after the other.
All-American forward Va
nessa Corbett was a main
factor on Elon’s inside
game. She is now averaging
12 rebounds a game along
with 19 points and 17 as
sists. She can also be an
outside threat with her text
book jump shot.
Two other players that are
averaging in double figures
are guard Nuggie Dixon and
guard Lou Williamson. Dix
on has an average of 20
points per game along with
19 steals and 8 assists.
Williamson is averaging 13
points per game with an
impressive record of 54 total
assists and 25 steals. Dixon
