Page 2 The Pendulum Thursday, Feb. 26,1981 Apathy invades government E^torials Student apathy is rampant in the student government of Elon College. Now before the SGA is a bill that will reduce the number of senators from 21 to 15. But will this bill, if it passes, reduce the problem of apathy? According to one source in the SGA, an attempt is being made to improve the overall quality of the senators and the sense of pride in government. Perhaps this is why al most $1,500 is being spent to panel and carpet a senate room. But for what? With only four senators returning from last year, only two senators have not missed a senate meeting. This record is deplorable. It has been a difficult year for the senate. All of the bills except one have been introduced by the SGA presi dent, vice-president, or treasurer. In other words, many senators are slack. Twice there were so many senators missing from the regular semi-monthly meeting that a quorum could not be met. Of the 37 senate members, usually about 20 appear at the meet ings. However, after senators miss two consecutive or three total meetings, they come before the senate judicial review. Several senators are now in senate judicial review. The SGA should be something that all students consider vital to their well-being. What can be done about the apathy? Communication seems to be a key that is missing from student govern ment. The student body does not know what the SGA is doing. In fact, some wonder if they are doing any thing at all except building themselves a brand new senate room. The majority of the senators sit at the meetings saying not one word. Students need to tell their senators what they want. The senators should try their best to serve the students through legislation and discussion. One idea might be to have work shops for those entering the SGA. Only four senators knew what was going on last fall (the four who re turned). These infbrmative conven tions should be held on campus so that expense would not be a problem. We need an active SGA. But you, the students must demand it. Have you talked to your senator lately? What mtr readers say Conservative view on ‘peace’ To the editor: The Feb. 12 headline, “Faculty upset with course objectives,” is yet another sign of both poor journalism and leftist myths. It is poor journalism since it amounts to an editorial appearing as a news article. The statement “Many fa culty agreed to add this course with misgivings...” conflicts with the reaction of professors I spoke with; at least three of the seven were unaware of the new course and none knew of any opposition. (One of these professors is a respected member of Prof. Smith’s department). The only hint of “opposition” was a re- commendaton for a “peace studies” course made by Prof. Smith. “Peace Studies” activities and courses have acted as general leftist propaganda fronts elsewhere— often de voting their time to a mix of left-wing “causes” unrelated to international relations. Leftist thinking has become a major factor at many U.S. colleges, often in the guise of “Christianity” by attemp ting to impart a feeling of guilt over American pros perity. “Academic freedom” does not extend to conser vatives— note the nonexis tence of courses with this viewpoint. ROTC and OCS have been a route for advance ment for many, especially the “underprivileged.” Left ism has been only a path to death and oppression. Let us remember this. Matt Maggio Editor’s note: Prof. Smith’s article appeared on Page 3, clearly marked as “What our readers say” and “Opo- nion.” And the three profes sors shoold have known about the American military history course approved at the February faculty meet ing. Support men’s basketball team To the Editor: More fan support should be issued to our men’s basketball team. Playoffs are beginning; therefore, more spectators are needed. The sororities and frater nities were absent at the majority of Elon’s home games. The student body, faculty members, and all organizations should follow the team to participate. As a regular spectator, I saw a great number of empty spaces in Alumni Gym this season. Why not give a second place team credit when it is due? By showing a lack of support, the members of Elon’s bas ketball team would feel less important. The more people, the better a team performs, is my philosophy. This would help make the play offs a victorious and memo rable one. I must offer the “Zoo Crew” a large amount of credit. They have expressed more enthusiasm than all the other spectators com bined. The members of the “Zoo Crew” have followed the Elon players in a win or lose cause. When a team hears their home fans cheering and ap plauding they can react and play successfully. It’s a posi tive help. So come out and give it all you got by supporting your Fightin’ Christians.
