Page 2 The Pendulum March April 2,1981 Hamilton bids farewell to readers This week’s issue of the Pendalam marks the 2Sth consecutive week this editor has headed the operation. I would like to reflect upon this academic year. The success of the Pendulmn has depended very much upon the dedication of the staff. Many of these people have worked unselfishly and without monetary compensation. To the staff and the journalism classes who have contributed, I would like to say a special “thank you.” Dr. Mary Ellen Priestley, adviser, has proved invaluable, putting in endless hours helping us. Priscilla Crumpton, typesetter at the City>Couiity Newspaper has also bMn an asset. Hinton Press of Mebane has often gone beyond the usual duties of a printer to see that the paper arrived on time. Bill Sharpe and the media board have always been supportive. liie Chicago convention was one highlight of the year for two staff members. Robin Adams, feature editor, and I, brought back several innovative ideas that are being put to use. Although the Pendalam has not been perfect this year, the staff has striven for a goal of perfection. I hope that the readers of the Pendulam will give the same consideration to the new editor as this editor has received. Several changes have been made in the format of the Peodalam this year. Page 3 has developed as an opinion page featuring our readers. The editorial page now has a contrast in type size. The main editorial is usually set in 12 point type. This contrasts with the 10 point type for the rest of the page. Cartoons and artwork in the Pendulam have also been increased to make the newspaper more eye-appealing. The staff has made sacriflces, including grades and free time to make the Pendalam a flrst-class newspaper. However, the effort all seems worth while when one sees the Pendalam being read. On any given Thursday morning, stacks of the Pendulam fill the racks near the rotunda in Alamance. A few short hours later, these newspa pers have disappeared. This leads the staff to think that the newspaper is being read by students and faculty. This is all the reward we ne^. Reader response has been active, even if not always positive. Taped on the door of the Pendalam office is a statement that reads, "You will never know how much i have enjoyed your criticism.” This holds true. It has been a long, and at times, tiring year. The editor has done her best to serve you, the students and staff of Elon College. I would like to thank you, the readers, for continuing to support the Pendalam. Without the readers, theiie would be no point in producing the Pendalam. Thank you for your support and criticism. Without feedback, it is hard to ma|ff positive changes. JOY A. Their terms will start next week. Mari is an English-jouma- lism major with a minor in history. Some of her goals include a “closer relation ship with the Pendalam and the journalism students, new layout design, and having more non-journalism stu dents contributing to the Pendnlum.” Behrend has served as lay-out specialist and news editor for the Pendalam. She says, “I think Teresa and I would work weU together. The two of us complement each other and all the pressure won’t be on one person.” Behrend, from Kensington, Maryland, “hopes to work on a large newspaper or m^azme upon graduation.” ^ ^ Warren is a native of Burhngton. She is major- m English with minors in biology and journalism. She hopes to write for a public relations firm upon gradua tion. Teresa says, “Mari and 1 have different skills and will be able to put out a good newspajjer because of these skills. This way, we both bear the pressure and gain experience.” Warren is the editor of the “Pipeline,” an arts suppl^ ment to the Barlington Daily Tlmes-News. She attended Temple University in Tenne- see for one year before coming to Elon.
