Violations alleged
A repeat election for pres
ident of the Student Gov
ernment Association will be
held Monday and Tuesday,
Janice Nelson, chairman of
the Board of Elections, an
nounces.
Last week’s election of the
president was declared inval
id after allegations of so
liciting votes near the polls
by a candidate and workers
at the polls.
After being reprimanded,
the candidate did not heed
the warning and continued
to solicit votes. Students
attending the poll booths
also influenced the votes cast
by others for both sides,
said Ms. Nelson.
Under policies and proce
dures of the Senate, “no
campaign signs or campaign
material will be permitted
within the polling area dur
ing voting hours,” and “so
licitation or coercion by
anyone in the polling pre
cinct shall be considered an
honor code violation.”
Interpretation of rules
proved to be a problem for
the presidential candidates.
SGA to repeat election
According to Mark Hayes,
student defense attorney,
and Ms. Nelson, director of
elections, honor court was
ruled out because the actions
of the candidate were not
/‘malicious actions.” Stu
dent officials felt that no
disciplinary actions should
be brought against the can
didate or anyone else soli-
. citing at the polls.
When questioned by a
Pendulum reporter, Hayes
and Nelson said that the
rules for elections are pub
lished in the policies and
procedures of the SGA and
each candidate was expected
to know and adhere to
them.
Although no rules were
actually given to the candi
dates, Nelson said, “We’ve
never had any problems with
this before.”
Last Thursday before the
elections were over, several
questions about the validity
of the results were made by
students to officials of the
SGA complaining that a
candidate and other students
were soliciting around the

polls.
On Friday when the votes
were counted by election of
ficials, John Sadler, SGA
president, Janice Nelson,
and Jim Hackney, a college
administrator, the results
were declared unofficial
pending further investigation
of the accusations and a
final decision on the validity
of the election.
The board of elections is
in charge of calling an elec
tion invalid. This board con
sists of eight senior senators
and class officers, only one
of whom is now active. For
this reason, John Sadler ap
pointed an advisory board to
be set up to help Ms. Nelson
make a final decision.
The board was composed
of top SGA officials: Mark
Hayes, student defense at
torney; Dennis Bailey, attor
ney general; and Danny
