Golden Girls to play in NAIA District 26 by Debbie Hurley This year Elon’s Golden Girls volleyball team is in the District 26 NAIA con ference, which includes 21 other schools. According to coach Karen Carden, “We will be playing teams which we haven’t played in the All these schools are tough and very competitive, which will make our team work harder to win.” The team has been prac ticing since Sept. 7. The emphasis has been on quick ness and footwork, which will “get you a lot of shots that would normally be left untouched,” coach Carden says. “The players should be in good physical condition to play in three matches in a row and still stay mentally strong,” said Coach Carden. She hopes to improve last year’s record of 22-15. She says the team is stronger than last year’s because five players return. Of 12 players on the team, seven are newcomers. Two are transfer students-Phyliss Wardlaw from High Point College and Jeanie Augustine from UNC-G. Susan Overbee, who didn’t play last year as a freshman “will definitely be playing this year as a setter,” says Coach Carden. A setter is a key position because she prepares the ball for the spike or getting the ball over the net. Jeanie Hairston and Barbara Carter will “spark” up the team with their offensive abilities, Carden predicts.
