tursday, October 1, 1981 The Pendulum Page 7 ‘Anything goes” by Debbie Hurley When you step into a four-walled handball court through its back door, you can then realize how handball could be considered a fast and exciting game. As you pull the gloves on for your first encounter, the suspense begins; you start to feel like a bull in an enclosed arena, with people watching from above. Your only defense is the hand, which hits a hard rubber ball a V* inch thick and 1-7/8 inches in diameter, weighing 2.3 ounces. When you begin to warm up, you start thinking about the basic rules like serving. When one starts to serve the ball, it must hit the floor before the back wall. It can’t hit all the walls; it has to hit the front wall on a fly. Your opponent can return it on a fly or a bounce, but the ball can’t hit the floor, or another wall other than the front wall. The game is played until one of the players reaches 21 points. A point can be scor^ only if it is your serve and the opponent misses a shot. When the swelling of the hand begins to hurt, you realize that handball is a game that can best be learned through experience and patience. Handball is a sport on which one can improve for the rest of his life. : It alsoi combines stamina, timing and speed with fun. This sport was first played in Ireland in the 900 s and imported by the U.S.A. in the 18th century. This helps to explain the bumps, bruises and fatigue that go along with the game. The facilities available for handball are usually found in most Y.M.C.A.’s, health resorts and some schools or colleges. Four people at once can play as partners or singles. Handball is a very inexpensive sport. All you need is a pair of leather gloves and a ' handball, plus a little courage to challenge this unique sport. JVIIA.T? Organizational Fair J WHERE?
