Photo by Debbie Huriey Fighting Christians capture Lenoir-Rhyne 12-3: Quarterback John Bangley rushed for 91 yards and a touchdown to lead the Elon College Fighting Christians to a 12-3 victory over Lenoir-Rhyne in SAC-8 football action here last Saturday. The win gave the NAIA No. 1 ranked Fighting Christians a 3-0 mark for the season while the Bears fell to 0-5. A stingy Lenoir-Rhyne de fense held Elon scoreless until the middle of the second quarter when Phil Renn put the hosts up 3-0 with a 31-yard field goi. Just before the half Renn connected on a 42-yard field goal for a 6-0 halftime lead. Elon opened up the sec ond half with a 44-yard scoring drive that was cap ped by Bangley’s 17-yard run. After the extra point kick failed, the Fighting Christians held a 12-0 lead. Lenior-Rhyne became the first team to score on Elon in 1981 when Jeff Long booted a 38-yard field goal in the fourth quarter. Charlie Rodgers led Elon running backs with 66 yards rushing as the Fighting Christians totaled 227 yards on the ground. Elon visits Norfolk State in key matchup Saturday by David Temple The Fighting Christians, fresh from a 12-3 win over Lenoir-Rhyne, will travel to Foreman Field in Norfolk, Va., this Saturday to take on the Spartans of Norfolk State in a contest that will give Elon an important trial. Norfolk comes into the game with a 3-1 record in 1981 and an offense that has been explosive at times. Stanley Allbritton and Orlando Goodhope give the Spartans an impressive run ning attack that has racked up more than 700 yards in rushing. What the Spartans are unable to achieve on the ground they take via a passing game sparked by quarterback Raymond Revels. Revels has connected on 36 of 74 passes this season covering 404 yards. Elon will confront the Norfolk State offense with a defensive unit that ranks number one in the SAC-8 in total defense. Stanley and Ernie Tootoo form the heart of the Elon defense while the defensive line has been securely anchored by Chris Worst. The Tootoo brothers have combined for 34 solo tackles and 33 assists while Worst has collected five quarterback sacks. Corner- back Ken Angel leads the secondary with 13 tackles and two interceptions. Norfolk State has an equally strong linebacking corps with Lee Billups and Ronnie Palmer. Billups has accumulated 38 tackles whiel Palmer has totaled 36 through four games. Nor folk has a formidable de fensive line and secondary that feattu-es both exerience and speed. John Bangley has been the unquestioned leader of the Fighting Christians this sea son. Bangley has passed for 456 yards and two touch downs this season while also onerging as the team’s sec ond leading rusher with 140 yards. Bangley is flanked by Jerry Hedrick and Fred Jor dan at runningbacks. Hedrick has gained 146 yards on the ground through four games and Jordan has netted 105 yards. Excellent performances by Elon’s offensive line have been a key thus far as has the receiving corps led by Steve Varnus. Norfolk State could give Elon one of its toughest games of the year. Not since edging Mars Hill 8-0 have the Fighting Christians challenged a team with such offensive and defensive talent. The Spartans were ranked seventh in the NAIA National Poll prior to last week’s loss to Winston Salem State. Elon must avoid the untimely turnovers that have been a problem in the first three games. Norfolk State is fully aware that the home field advantage will be theirs, and they are readying for what will be a crucial game for both squads. Despite losing to Wake Forest University, 16-14, 15-7, and Lenoir-Rhyne College, 15-13, 15-13, the team is working very hard on the communication prob lem, staying mentally alert and using the quickness that they have. According to coach Karen Carden, “We ’have played very hard, and hopefully, we start to turn the tables very soon by starting to win those very close games.” Jeannie Hairston, a co captain commented, “The team has the talent to win, but the lack of communica- tion is costing us those crutial points that we need to win.” “One of the reasons we are having a problem getting started is because of the communication and concen tration between the players, and we play exactly like we practice,” said Barbara Carter, the other co-captain.
