FCA stresses fellowship
among campus athletes
By Joel Maness
The Fellowship of Chris
tian Athletes is an organiza
tion that stresses the “Chris
tian” aspect of its title more
than the “Athletes.” Their
purpose is to bring together
students to talk about their
concerns, doubts, feelings,
and to share fellowship
around a commitment to
Jesus Christ.
You don’t even have to be
an athlete to participate in
the FCA. This is because
some high school athletes
don’t pursue athletics in
college.
The stated purpose of the
FCA is “to present to ath
letes and coaches, and all
whom they influence, the
challenge and adventure of
receiving Jesus Christ as
Savior and Lord, serving
Him in their relationships
and in the fellowship of the
church.”
Most of the FCA studies
are geared to athletics and
how one can work for Christ
while being involved in sports
A typical FCA meeting
opens with prayer. FCA
president Cliff Parker dis
cusses any business, plans,
or activities planned.
Sometimes a guest speaker
will deliver a message. For
example, on one occasion
Garry Baldwin, the FCA
district director, spoke on
the “challenge and adven
ture of following Christ.”
Throughout the meeting
the group usually has time
for singing. The meeting
closes in prayer.
One major event the FCA
has planned for the near
future is the Weekend of
Champions, which will be
held April 23-25 at Elon
College. The event will
draw professional and col
lege athletes from all across
the nation. They will share
what role Christ plays in
their lives.
FCA officers include Cliff
Parker, president; A1 Beck,
president-elect; Lisa Brown,
treasurer; Fred Applin, se
cretary; and Kel Peterson,
chaplain.
Remember, you don’t
have to be an athlete to join
FCA. The group meets
Mondays at 9 p.m. in Jor
dan Gym.
