I^age 10 Sidelines by David Temple would finally be removed, but because I feared that he would somehow survive and go on to rule baseball through another turbulent decade. The Voting In baseball politics it was decided a long time ago that a commissioner could only be removed if a total of nine owners (four from one league and five from the It was with apprehension that I awaited the announce ment a few nights ago concerning the future of baseball Commissioner Bowie Kuhn. For many years Kuhn’s future in base ball has seemed uncertain as various minority groups of owner, attempted to oust him. I was apprehensive, not because I was afraid that he The Pendulum other) cast “no” votes when it came time to rehirc. Some owners, such as the O’Malley family which owns the Los Angeles Dodgers, tried to save Kuhn’s job and sell their idea of redefining or lessening the commis sioner’s power. Many ideas were thrown around includ ing a plan to elect the equivalent of a vice-presi dent who would serve as an “aide” to Kuhn. But in the end Kuhn discovered that he had made too many enemies. White cites athletic contributions Cont. from p. 8 A: $20,000 for 1982. Q: Has the large turnover of players affected the team psychologically or is the team just inexperienced? A: “We’ve lost more to injuries this year than to graduation or expired eligi bility,” White said. Q: Will our losses hurt recruiters and admissions? A: “It shouldn’t, from the recruiters’ standpoint, in one year’s time,” the AD re plied. “Our gate receipts are at the same level and devel opmental giving is increas ing.” Q: With two NAIA foot ball championships to our credit, why doesn’t Elon have its own on-campus stadium? A: “We must take the initial cost and yearly maint enance of a field into con sideration. At the present time we pay no maintenance fees. Burlington Memorial Stadium is only three miles away. On many larger camp uses, the football field is at least that far from the rest of the campus.” Q: Why is the weight room so small? A: “It is the only space we have at the present time. We hope to expand by the end of the year.” Only one other sport was singled out for questioning: Q: SGA gives money to the Lacrosse Club. Why is it a club and not a team? A: Guilford College is the only other college in the area with a team and Elon does not have the money to support an additional team sport now. Don's Sports History While giving historical background about Elon’s athletic program, White said that the first athletic com mittee was formed in 1911, three years after the first athletic director was ap pointed. To date, the com mittee oversees the athletic program, sets policy and approves schedules. As athletic director, White works with a similar com mittee on all questions con cerning athletics. In their striving for excellence, he SUB Coffeehouse presents a mini-concert with Accustie Music From Ireland and America Mark Dennis opens program at 8:15 Tuesday, Nov. 9, 9-11 p.m. Free Admission—Varsity Grill Hot dog—25 said, the department still tries “to keep athletics in the proper perspective, in keep ing with the (education) mis sion of Elon College.” A native of North Caro lina, White has been involv ed in athletics most of his life. He has earned both a master’s degree and doctor ate in athletic studies, and has taught high school and college physical education. Maay Problems In the 13 years that Kuhn has served as commissioner the main problem has not been an overuse of fX)wer but rather the commission er’s tendency not to say anything while sweeping changes reshaped the game. I am not calling tor a dic tator in the commissioner’s office. Baseball simply need ed some show of concern from the man who is hired to guard the best interests of the game. Kuhn chose to sit in his office and adopt a laissez-faire attitude. A Change Needed Today baseball finds itself in the same position that it was in the 1920s when base ball received a bad name due Thursday, Nov. 4,1982 to the Black Sox scandal of 1919 in which players were convicted of throwing i World Series. Indeed greed and money in the 1970s has tarnished baseball once again. As they did in the 1931 baseball owners need to a|> point a strong leader as commissioner who will tab an active part in the runnii of baseball. The 1980s hai the potential to be as ti bulent in baseball as the decade. Passivity can longer be allowed in commissioner’s chair. As a knowledgable concerned baseball compaj ion, I feel the need either fo a strong commissioner or ni commissioner at all. ani SILVER SPOON CATERERS We’ll pack your lunch for the next home ballgame, romnmic picnic or informal party.
