The Pendulum Thursday, Feb. 3,1983 Sidelines. by David Temple Now that the spring term is about to begin, it is time to catch up on what happened in the world of sports during the past two months. Football Unless you’ve been in inner Mongolia for the past two weeks, you know that the Washington Redskins captured the Super Bowl with a win over the Miami Dolphins. The telecast, which ranked as the second most watched television show in history behind the “Who Shot J.R.?” episode of Dallas, turned out to be more interesting than the game. The NBC sports team is innovating, accurate, colorful and a bunch of showoffs. It is a shame that so much hype is associated with the Super Bowl. Certainly this year’s game deserved a leading role in the extravaganza. Basketball The North Carolina Tar Heels have been reinstated as the; number one team in college basketball after reeling off 14 unanswered wins. Even the most avid fans of the team must admit that a few of those games could have gone the other way and probably should have. It remains to be seen whether Dean Smith’s talented young players will stay intact as the ACC title race nears completion. After a good start, the Elon College basketball team has experienced some disappointments in the past month. The Fightin’ Christians have a fine team this season with scorers such as Joe DeShazo and Bengie Tate leading the way. Unfortunately the majority of the teams in the Carolinas Conference have proven to be better and Elon will be in for some tough games in the coming weeks. In NBA action the Boston Celtics and the Los Angeles Lakers have been virtuaUy unbeatable in the past month. The Lakers are benefitting from the play of two former UNC stars, Bob McAdoo and James Worthy, while the Celtics are benefitting from perennial stars such as Larry Bird and Danny Ainge. The NBA season has been unusually exciting this season with close rages in nearly all of the divisions, and the outlook is rosy for the upcoming NBA playoffs. Miscellaneous Recently I watched Ivan Lendl take John McEnroe completely apart in three sets. Lendl appears to be challenging McEnroe’s two-year dominance of the men’s pro circuit while it has been announced that Bjom Borg, who did more than anyone in recent years to keep the game on network television, has decided to retire. I welcomed the announcement because Borg really gave up the game about a year ago and it has been difflcult to watch him being beaten by lesser players. The PGA kicked off its 1983 season two weeks ago with the Bob Hope Desert Classic and the ratings were good. The tournament featured a sudden death playoff along with excellent rounds by stars such as Craig Stadler and Jack Nicklaus. Television in general and CBS in particular is doing a better job in broadcasting the intricate game of golf. Vin Scully, the ageless baseball announcer, is lending his skills to CBS along with former players such as Ben Venturi and Lee Trevino.
