However, to many Dpie, February focuses upon another /important time of the year — Black History Month. During this month, a special effort is nuule to praise and appreciate the talent, dignity and heritage of black Americans. Quite often, black achievements and efforts are overlooked because most people are not informed about black history. One of the most famous civil rights leaders, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., will ilways be admired because of his out standing efforts to achieve equality and justice for black Americans. King led the blacks in non-violent movements which made a difference in many people’s lives. Before his tragic death, he left millions of listeners with his most inspirational speech, “I Have a Dream...” The civil rights movement is one of the many efforts of black people. How ever, few people realize that there are black achievements in science, medicine, education, and the military. Dr. Daniel Hale Williams, well known for performing the first open heart ^gery, also developed a method to stop hemorrhages from the spleen. Dr. Ernest A. Just, scientist, magna cum laude. Phi Beta Kappa, and Dartmouth Scholar, produced new con cepts of cell life and metabolism. During World War II, Dorie Miller was America’s first hero on December 7, 1941, when he shot down six Zeros with a oachine gun which he had never fired before. These are only a few achievements by black Americans. The names may be When one hears the statement, ^We are recognizing Black History Month, ’ it is too often assumed that only black people should participate. Society should overcome this negative attitude. unfamiliar, but the work behind these great men is unforgettable. Although achievement is a major theme of Black History Month, there is still one major theme to especially notice. This is also a time for blacks to realize, appreciate, and be proud of being a member of the Negro race, and to try to be the leaders that our forefathers would admire. When one hears the statement, “We are recognizing Black History Month,” it is too often assumed that only black people should participate. Society should overcome this negative attitude. Of course blacks are the ones who should be the proudest, but other races as well should be willing to learn, accept and praise the highlights of this very special month. On Sunday, Portrait in Black will open the activities. Portrait in Black is a black talent show which will include such acts as student singers, guitarists, and artists. The talent show will be held at 8 p.m. in Mooney Theater. On Monday, the Gospel Choir led by Ike Credle will present a one-hour concert at 8 p.m. in Whitley Auditoriiun. The Construction Dance Company will also participate in the activities with an hour performance on Wednesday at 8 p.m. in Whitley Auditorium. A dance in the Long Student Center Lounge will conclude Delta Sigma Theta’s recognition of Black History Month. The dance will be held on Feb. 25 at 9 p.m. No admission will be charged for any of the activities. 102 N.
