That may be the reaction of many when they are reminded that today is St. Patrick’s Day, but for those with Irish blood, it is a time for celebration and family get-togethcrs. The “wearing of the green” is a popular custom even for those who aren’t Irish, like sophomore Beth Temple from Winston-Salem, N.C. “I plan to wear green just so I won’t get pinched to death!” she said. There are quite a few Irish people in campus here at Elon. For these students, today is an occasion to celebrate by wearing green, which is symbolic of the Irish four-leaf clover. Freshman Jim Hallihan, who lives near Washington, D.C., describes St. Patrick’s Day as “one big shindig.” He and his full-blooded Irish family always get together for the holiday and celebrate their heritage. “Everybody dances while my uncle plays the bagpipes,” he said. “We all wear a lot of green and drink a lot of green beer.” Another Washington, D.C. student, who is a true-to-heart Irishman, says that on St. Patrick’s Day her sisters and brothers give flowers and gifts to her mother. “We eat com beef and cabbage and drink Irish whiskey,” she said. “Then we go to the bars in Georgetown.” The commemoration of St. Patrick, patron saint of Ireland, is an event that the Irish look forward to each year. And why not! Seeing the Irish celebrating the “Irish way,” is enough to make anybody who is not Irish “green with envy.” Student Union Board presents another ^Open Mike Night Tuesday, April 5 7:30 - 10:30 p.m. Varsity Grill Acoustic and Piano talent acts are welcome!
