Christopher White, dean of academic affairs since 1978, has been appointed vice president for academic and student affairs. White succeeds Dr. James A. Moncure whose resignation to return to the classroom becomes effective May 31. In his new position. White will be in charge of aca demic affairs, student life programs, the library and learning resources center, career development and academic advising and the registrar. “Dean White is emi nently qualified for this position,” Dr. Fred Young, president of the college, said. “He has the academic qualiflcations, the manager ial skills essential for the position, the philisophical orientation required to pro vide leadership and direc tion, the support of his colleagues on the faculty and staff and the high energy level needed to carry out the extensive responsibilities the position entails.” Moncure, commenting on his successor, said that White’s knowledge of the human resources of the insti tution will make a smooth transition without the loss of time involved if an outside party had been appointed. “No one could be better prepared for this position than Dean White,” Moncure said. White expressed his appre ciation for the confidence the president has inhis abil ity to carry oiit the responsi bilities of the position. “I am challenged by the oppor tunities the position offers,” WTiite said. White said that as vice president he will try to integrate Elon’s resources in an effort to maintain and strengthen the liberal arts and professional programs. “Nevertheless, I shall need all the help I can receive from members of the faculty and staff to accomplish Different approach to DUIs in Elon Dr. Chris White those tasks and meet those responsibilities the office requires for the furtherance of Elon’s mission,” he said. No one has been named to succeed White as dean of academic affairs. New department chair manships have also been announced. Serving for the 1983-85 two-year term will be Herbert W. House, Jr., biology; Howard R. Higgs, human services; Ralph V. Anderson, economics; Paul D. Williams, Jr., education and psychology; Russell B. Gill, literature, languages and communications: and E. Franklin Harris, physical sciences. The new chairmen assume their duties officially in September. by Doug Norwood Managing Editor Elon College’s police chief said that his department’s policy has been, and will continue to be, looking for alternatives to arresting sus pected drunken drivers. While the public has only recently become more aware of the dangers of driving under the influence, he said the Elon police have always considered drunken driving a serious violation. “In the vast majority of instances,” Police Chief Sam Jones said, “we attempt to have someone else drive the vehicle.” He said that his officers use their own discretion in determining whether a driver should be arrested. “We are trying to take the impaired driver from behind the wheel of the car. That is the intent of the law. It doesn’t say we have to arrest the impaired driver and lock him up,” he said. Jones said that he and his officers frequently will allow a passenger to drive the car of a suspected drunken driver if the officer deems that that passenger is sober. To ensure that the passenger is sober, the officer may request that the passenger perform a “road test,” Jones said. He said another way of getting the suspected off^end- er from behind the wheel is for the officer to leave the suspect’s car parked on the side of the road and drive him home in the police car. Jones said that his officers will do that only when the suspect lives in the depart ment’s jurisdiction. He said this is something impossible if the officer has other calls to respond to. Jones said that his officers can, and frequently do, take the suspect to a telephone to call a friend or relative to come pick him up if the cont. on p. 3 V- -■ IHIfl II m mil ■'■‘kW ■# ^Spring or winter, . .
