Page 16 The Pendulum Thursday, September 29, la Somethings going on • • • City Stage celebration hits Greensboro streets By Felicia Fogleman Arts Editor It’s educating and entertaining. You can see it, taste it, hear it and feel it. What is it? It's the Greensboro City Stage Celebration on Oct. 1-2. The City Stage is a combination of arts, music, craftsmanship and international flavors held annually on the streets and in several buildings in downtown Greensboro. It’s underwritten by the Miller Brewer Co. and co-sponsored by the United Arts Council of Greens- Eye Catchers You can make your eyes dance as you watch the Frank Holder Dance Company. Or perhaps the Linda Bryan Hula Dancers and Belly Dancers will put a sparkle in your eye. Other groups will dazzle you too. Near the Greensboro Historical Museum crafts will be demons trated. This will include sheep-shearing, wool-spinning and natu ral dyeing. Such crafts as basketry, applehead dolls, woodcarving and hide- tanning will be on exhibition and to clean things up a bit, there’s soap making. While you’re using your other four senses on the Greensboro streets, open your ears to bluegrass, swing music, beach music and rock ’n roll. Six groups headline the festival: the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Bo Thorpe and His Generation II Orchestra, the Chairman of the Board, the Band of Oz, Oingo Boingo and the Spongetones. Mixing country with rock, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band will perform two shows each day. The Band of Oz will perform twice Sunday. Chairman of the Board will perform twice Saturday. And then the Spongetones will blast music at the party Friday and twice Saturday featuring music from the ’60s British rock inva sion. Tastebud Tinglers Let the fudge hit your sweet tooth or the pinto beans and corn- bread hit your tummy as the festival gets underway. Forty-five food vendors will be at your convenience with such foods as: egg rolls, meatball sandwiches, falafel in pita bread or plain ole ham bis cuits that can be washed down with soft drinks, coffee, spiced teas or beer (only in two beer gardens).
