PRIDE II progress report • 5' ; : t ■ . ! r /'« I , -i ['cVii- Thursday^ November 3, 1983 Comers of Burlington pledge *100,000 this week D R E P The Elon College PRIDE II Campaign received another financial boost this week when a member of the Elon Pres idential Board of Advisers and his wife pledged $100,000 to the campaign. Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Comer of Burlington are donating an additional $100,000 to the Mar vin H. and Aura Brown Comer Endowment Fund, which they established with a $50,000 gift in December 1977 during the PRIDE I Campaign. The fund will provide income for scho larships to qualified and de serving students on a con tinuing basis. PRIDE II which stands for “Providing Resources for Insti tutional Development at Elon,” was announced in mid-October and has generated several large gifts to the college. The Comers have no children of their own but have had a long standing interest in young peo ple and their education. Comer is a retired executive of Burlington Industries, Kays- er-Roth, and Comer-Gordon, Inc. He has been a member of the Elon College Presidential Board of Advisers for the past seven years. He actively par ticipated as a volunteer in the PRIDE I campaign. Mrs. Comer, the former Aura Brown, is a native of Rocking ham County. She has partici pated widely in community and church affairs in Burlington. In making this latest gift to Who’s Who taps 18 from Elon The 1984 edition of Who’s Who Among Students in Amer ican Universities and Colleges will include the names of 18 stu dents from Elon College who have been selected as national outstanding campus leaders. Campus nominating commit tees and editors of the annual directory have included the names of these students based on their academic achieve ments. service to the commun ity, leadership in extracurricu lar activities and potential for continued success. They join a group of students selected from more than 1,500 institutions of higher learning in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and several foreign nations. Students named this year from Elon College are: Susan Marie Bowling, Patricia Lynn Brammer, Charles Raymer Mellon scholars nominated By Debbie Sapsara Staff Writer The Committee on Graduate Studies has chosen nominees for the Mellon Fellowships in the Humanities Awards this year. This year’s nominees are Diane McSheehy and Jeff Ste wart. The Mellon Scholarship is for any senior who can present evidence of outstanding academic promise and wishes to begin graduate work in pre- paration for a career of teaching and scholarship in an humanistic field of study. McSheehy, a senior English major, is a member of Sigma Tau Delta and Omicron Delta Kappa. She is a regular name on the Dean’s list, a tutor in the LRC, a member of Who’s Who Among American College and Universities and involved in the Honor s Program. McSheehy has served as Assis tant to the Attorney General, the Defense Attorney General, and become the Attorney General her junior year. Stewart is a senior, majoring in Philosophy and English. He is a member of Theta Alpha Kappa and Sigma Tau Delta. Stewart is also Vice-President of Alpha Chi and has served on the library committee for one year.
