Photo by Cord Finlay Women’s Basketball^ iNews briefa begins Saturday By Alicia Gaddy Staff Writer “Last year was a building year,” said women’s basketball coach Mary Jackson. The Gol den Girls roster included five freshmen last year and coach Jackson is looking forward to the experience ofthe returning players to improve the pre vious 14-12 record. The team will be led by Don na Trollinger, a junior from Graham, Renate Costner, a senior from Graham, Cathy Jones, a junior from Greens boro; Jamie McNeely, a sopho more from Icard, N.C.; and Susan Overbey, a senior from Durham. Other returning players are senior Susan Wilson and soph omores Faith Pitts and Erika Gunter. Newcomers to the Gol den Girls squad are junior Ati- cia Gaddy and freshmen Yolan da Stockton, Lisa Briggs, and Katanja Clapp. Last year Trollinger led the team in scoring with a 16.8 average, while Jones added 13.8 points. Costner led the team with 69 assists. Jackson said, “We need work on defense, but offensively we have 12 girls who could put the ball through the hoop.” She also said, “The people who see the most playing time are the people who are playing the best defense.” Jackson is pretty optimistic about her upcoming season. Although the Golden Girls face a tough schedule, she said that with hard work and on their fastbreak style of play, the team should be able to out run a lot of people. Elon will open its season against Pembroke State Uni versity, the number one pick in the preseason polls. The Gol den Girls were picked to take second in the Carolinas Con ference. Lee’s attempted two-point conversion pass was inter cepted by Elon’s Kenny Angel, leaving the score 13-6 with 6:40 left. Then, after Jonas Davis lost another fumble at the Elon 26, ,Lee rifled the ball to Jamison between two Elon defenders in the end zone, making it 13-12. But Elon’s Jeff Knox knocked down the ensuing two-point conversion pass, and Bowie State would get no closer. In the third quarter, follow ing a Bulldogs’ punt into the wind that carried only seven yards, Elon moved from the ; hosts’ 44 to the four, where ' Davis coughed up the ball yet again. However, with 2:15 left in the period, the Christians’ Jeff Cooper sacked Lee, whose fumble was recovered by Bob LeBlanc at the Bowie State seven. Two plays later Fromhart fired to Stanley, who made a diving catch in the end zone, and Thorne’s kick made it 20-12. The Bulldogs made one more threat in the fourth quarter, j moving inside the Elon 35 be- 1 fore Angel made his second in- f Perception of the day. , The Christians’ final scoring i ( drive covered 80 yards, with Fromhart passing to Simmons from the 10 for the score and Thorne converting again at ‘*:26 remaining in the game.
