Tolley elected to Board of Aldermen
In his shirt sleeves, wearing a
loosely knotted necktie and
propping his foot on his desk as
he talks on the telephone, Jerry
Tolley seems perfectly at ease
in his job as Elon College’s
director of annual giving.
But two years ago, after
coaching the Elon football
team to a four-year record of
49-11-2 and two consecutive
NAIA championships, Tolley
said that he did not know the
first thing about the job he had
given up coaching to take. “I
just like a challenge,” he said.
“I used to be hesitant about
accepting new challenges, but 1
really like them now.”
On Nov. 8, the voters of Elon
College gave Tolley another
challenge when they elected
Jerry T«Uey
him to the town’s board of
aldermen. Tolley, the top vote-
getter in the non partisan elec
tion, said that his new job, just
like his one in the development
offices, is something “brand
new” to him.
“The reason I ran is that I
think a lot of the Elon commun
ity,” Tolley said. “I’ve lived
here for 17 years, and 1 felt like
1 needed to do something for
the town of Elon.
“In my campaign letter I said
that the town of Elon has been
good to me, and I’d like to help
it any way I can.”
Tolley said that he sees the
annexation of land south of the
town, which is being contested
by neighboring Burlington,
and the disbursing of a federal
grant for community revitaliza
tion as the major issues Elon
College faces. While he said he
does not know the intricacies
of either and has a lot of study
ing to do, Tolley said, “I’m real
ly looking forward to it; it’s
going to be a lot of work.”
Tolley said that, before the
election, he thought that if he
could get 150 votes he would be
one of the top three vote-
getters. all of whom win seats
on the board. “I was surprised
to be the top vote-getter,” he
said. Tolley, incumbent Chuck
Gantos and Sam Cousins won
seats.
Tolley is not the first Elon
College administrator to be
elected to the board, as the loc
al media reported. Town Mana
ger Beth Hetzel said that Jen
nings Berry, a former dean of
students at Elon, was on the
board when she came to the
town.
Tolley said that the rela
tionship between Elon, the
town, and Elon, the college, is a
strong one. “I don’t think there
is much of a dichotomy. In some
circles, some people have
thought that — but I don’t
“Through the last 90 some
years there have been some
rifts between the college and
the town, but it’s a good rela
tionship.”

number of articles for sports
and coaching journals and is

Fewer students

In a slight increase over last
year’s figure, 1,973 students
were pre-registered for Winter
Term. For Spring session. 2.020
students were pre-registered.
This figure is a decrease over
last year’s pre-registration fi
gure.
Registrar Mark Albertson
says, “I’m confident that we
will have as many or more stu
dents registered once Spring
gets here.” On the last day of
classes, Dec. 9. there will be a
drop/add day for both Winter
and Spring terms, from 9 a.m.-4
p.m. “There will be no restric
tions as to when a student can
drop/add,” says Albertson.
“Freshmen and seniors can
come in at 9 a.m.. it really
doesn’t matter.
Winter term registration will
be held on Tues., Jan. 3 in the
Registrar’s office. On Jan. 4,
classes will begin. Also on that
day will be drop^add for Winter
term. The maximum number of
hours that a student can take
Winter term is four. If a student
is registered to attend Winter
term, and then changes his
mind, he must notify the Reg
istrar immediately.
“If a student is full time in
the fall, it’s almost ^aranteed
that he will be registered for
Winter term by mail. They’ll re
ceive a schedule marked com
plete and they’re all set
“If for some reason a student
decides not to attend Winter
term and doesn’t tell me. I’ll
put them on the roll and they’ll
get an F for Winter term even
though they weren’t here.’’
