I ■nil Hill The Pendulum Thursday, February 2,1984 Volume X, Number 14 Carden succeeds Anderson as football coach Macky Carden By Daimy Hubbard Sports Editor Head football coach Wright Anderson, who turned down the head coaching job at Mar shall University in December, saying he wanted to stay at Elon. resigned his post two weeks later and joined the Oklahoma Outlaws of the Un ited States Football League as a coach for receivers and spe cial teams. Anderson, who compiled a 1- 6 record for the Christians in the 1982-83 season, was re placed by a man who has been at Elon for seven years as an offensive coordinator. Macky Carden. The 39-year-old Carden, who graduated from Elon in 1967 and is a native of Durham, be comes the third head coach here in the past five years. First there was Jerry Tolley, who led Elon to two strai^t NAIA national championships in 1980-81; then there was Anderson, both of whom Car den has coached under. Carden, who has never been a head coach in either high school or college seems to have the enthusiasm and desire of a leader that Elon demands from a coach. In a recent interview, he talked about how he learned to adjust his beliefs as a coach af ter so many years of watching others. “Wright Anderson was a great X and O coach; his approach was for talent.” Car den said. "Jerry Tolley was the confident, cocky type, and 1 think there is still some what of a Tolley image in me." Whatever image Carden por trays will be underlined by his most important belief — the player-to-coach relationship. When asked what will make him a good coach. Carden re plied. “Good players make good coaches." Along with returning play ers. whom Carden noted were “trying me out right now.” will be four assistant coaches. Wachovia made a gift of $25,000 to PRIDE II. Robert L. Saffelle Jr.. senior vice president of the financial institu tion said the gift will endow the Wacho via Fund for Excellence at Elon Col lege. First Federal Savings and Loan pledged $20,000 for PRIDE II. This gift will go toward the construction of the proposed fine arts center. PRIDE II is a three-year, $5.7 million capital campaign, the largest in the literal arts college’s history. Funds are being solicited for ongoing expenses, campus improvements, scholarships and endowments, and the fine arts cen ter, which is expected to cost approx imately $2.2 million. “We feel pretty good about it, but there is still a lot of work to be done.” said Tolley. Area campaigns to raise funds for PRIDE II are in progress, he said, and campaigns in Greensboro and Richmond. Va.. are plann^. pother campaign is under full-swing in Char lotte. Tolley cited the Alamance County campaign as the most critical of the area campaigns. “The people of Ala mance County gave a great percentage in the PRIDE I campaign, so it is impor tant to have their support again.” he said. Tolley said that not all of the alumni have been solicited to give contribu tions yet “We’ve been selective so far. but we will go through the masses. The Board of Trustees met their campaign goal of $1.5 million, and the faculty was also successful in raising more than $207,000, so things are looking good.” PtMo by Paul Hams Two~wheeler tour First impressions are lasting impressions, so the saying goes. If true, that might mean these twins, who paused recently by the Fonville Fountain on their stroller tour of the campus, could one day be members of the Class of2001.
