Page 6 The Pendulum Thursday, February 16,1984 Sports Men’s basketball Golden Girls keep rolling finds new life By Danny Hubbard Sports Editor The Fightn’ Christians men’s basketball team, slowly killing themselves the past month with poor shooting and injury problems, has revived their post-season outlook with two crucial conference victories from last week. After sliding into the thick of the conference race following five straight league losses, Elon was faced with having to end their slump against confer ence leader, Pfeiffer. The first time these two teams met, the Christians were blasted out of Meisenhemer, N.C., 93-71, as the powerful Fal cons proved that they were the team to beat in the conference. Revenge and respect was the game plan for Elon, as they were finally able to orches trate some precision on both ends of the court, and they broke the wings of the high flying conference leader at Alumni Gymnasium, 77-65. The Christians were able to match the fast starting Falcons in the first half after showing their determined, workman like play. At intermission, the score was 32-31 with Pfeiffer in the lead, after they produced effective scoring from William Milteer and Craig Cordea. Elon, led by Kenny Richard son and Andre Hines, was able to sink 15 of 27 floor shots (55%) to keep the game close. In the second half, Elon con tinued to play like their early season form as they shot 60 per cent from the floor, while Pfeif fer ran out of bird-feed and only hit 30 percent. The big reason for the slump- ending victory was due to the play of Hines and Richardson, who both finished with 14 points and eight rebounds, while the memories of last years upset victory over Pfeif fer in the first round of the con ference tournament was float ing around. Last Saturday night, Elon was a one-man show as forward Robert Leak played superman in scoring 24 points and grab bing eight rebounds, as the Christians dumped Atlantic Christian College. Elon dominated the last place team in the conference while shooting 57 percent foi the game. Other leading scor ers contributing to the Elon attack were Ricky Larry with 15 points and Richardson, and pfioto by Paul Harris Robert Leak Hines, both with 14 points each. With that win, the Christians were able to improve their re cord to 14-9 overall, 6-5 in the conference, and 6-7 in the dis trict. As a team, the Christians are averaging 75 points a game, and shooting 50 percent from the field. The leading scorer for Elon is Andre Hines, with 12 points a game; followed by Mike Allen with 10.7 points a game, and Richardson, and Larry, both with 10.5 points a game. On Wednesday, the High Point Panthers will invade Alumni Gym fora 7:30p.m. con test. Elon will be looking to re venge an earlier one-point loss to them. Alicia Gaddy Staff Writer The light continued to shine for the woman’s basketball team after they picked up three straight victories, thanks to the sharp shooting of juniors Don na Trollinger and Cathy Jones. Last Wednesday marked the last home game for seniors Re- nate Costner, Susan Overbey, and Susan Wilson, and nothing could have made the evening better than avenging an earlier 80-72 loss to Pfeiffer College. Jones led the team with 19 points and nine rebounds while Trollinger added 18 points and Jamie McNeely, Wilson, and Lisa Briggs scored 10 points each. The winning streak con tinued when the Golden Girls traveled to Durham to play dis trict foe North Carolina Cen tral University. In the first half, the lady ca- gers couldn’t get things going and trailed by four points at in termission. But in the second half, the Elon women settled in a groove with a hot hand. With less than six minutes reeling off the clock, the Golden Girls con nected on five straight baskets while the Lady Eagles only con nected on a single field goal and a free throw. The Golden Girls continued to sizzle the nets late into the second half With only 3:27 left in the game, Elon was riding a 70-64 lead and they never looked back.
