See concert review on page 7. By Loukia Louka Associate Editor The Elon College faculty voted Friday to approve major changes in the education prog- ram. The changes in the teacher education program re- flect the new standards approved by the N.C. Depart ment of Public Instruction and are the result of studies to im prove the quality of public school education. In 1978, the North Carolina Department of Public Instruc tion adopted the Quality Assur ance Program. Dr. Wesley Bro gan, associate professor of hu man services and chairman of the department of education, said, “Out of their studies, several different approaches to teacher education have grown. One of the feelings is that students needed a longer time to learn in the public clas sroom.” The revised program will re quire all students entering the teacher education program to have a practicum during their sophomore year. “This will probably happen during Win ter Term in the public school classroom,” Brogan said. Beginning in the Spring Semester of 1985, a full semes ter of student teaching will be required. Student teaching here now is only seven weeks long. While the state requires 10 weeks of teaching, the trend is moving to a full semester of teaching, Brogan said. Students in secondary education who will student teach in the Spring of 1985 must have completed Psychology of Adolescence and Foundations of Education by the end of the fall semester. They will have to complete their Methods Courses in Winter Term and student teach in the Spring. The same applies to students who are majoring in elementary education. With a full semester of stu dent teaching, there will be no more “block courses,” which are courses that are completed by mid-term. The methods and foundations courses will meet See faculty page 2 Senate approves fall break, BCS funding By Loukia Louka Associate Editor The Student Senate met last Thurs. night to discuss funding proposals for the Student Un ion Board, the Attorney and Defense Attorney General, the Black Cultural Society, Spring Fling Weekend, and a resolu tion to establish a Fall Break in 1985. The meeting was delayed 40 minutes because an insuffi cient number of senators appeared, thus failing to have a quorum of 14 needed to vote on the proposals. The absent .senators were contacted by phone, until a desired number were reached. SGA Vice- President Bob Moser said, “The senators who haven’t been regularly attending the senate meetings are going to be dismissed by the judicial com mittee and special elections will be held to fill their seats in the next two weeks.” When the meeting did begin, the first bill was a bill to pro vide salaries for the attorney general and defense attorney general. After a long debate, the bill was amended and pas sed. Originally, the bill was to give a stipend of $125 a month during 9 school months to the attorneys general. This bill was amended to provide $75 a month in salaries. The second bill was to pro vide stipends for SUB officers, which was passed after a leng thy debate. “They debated over technicalities,” said Moser, “but the senate basically felt the request was modest con sidering all the work they do.” The chairpersons were given $100 a year, while the president was given $200 a year. The third bill was a bill to appropriate senate unres tricted funds for Spring Fling Weekend, which will be held April 12-15, and is co sponsored by SGA and SUB. The senate approved $500, the majority of which will go to wards the dance. The fourth bill was to include the Black Cultural Society in See Senate page 2
