Page 2 The Pendulum Editorials Thursday. October 25! 1984 ! Trustees isolated from campus life Last week was an annual event here at Elon—the Board of Trustees made the first of their two visits to the college for the 1984-85 academic year. And, as usual, collge maintenance could be seen around campus cleaning the grounds and making sure the school looked presentable. The Board, which is responsible for policy making and approving the budget, is higher than even the president, in terms of what is actually accomplished at Elon. By coming to the school, they are better able to keep in touch with what the changing needs and issues are. But, year after year, the trustees make that once a semester visit, and the majority of the student body catches only fleeting glances of the board, as they move from the seclusion of their closed meetngs, to their secluded lucheons. One chance that students did have at meeting the trustees was at a college coffee that was held when most students had class. The trustees met and dined in areas of the college that most students never enter. It would be interesting to propose that the trustees eat lunch in crowded McEwen cafeteria, so they can experience the utter frustration that the masses know when looking for a lace to sit and eat lunch. Perhaps visiting some of the dorms, and listening to students’ concerns and fears would put them into a closer perspective on what it’s like to attend college today. All this is not to say that the trustees do not care about Elon, however their segregation from the students hinders their abil ity to make choices and decisions about the real issues at Elon, from a student’s point of view, and only gives them feedback that is primarily administrative. I poN'T KU.Y ME I m I like Senator Goniff. Heck, I think he's one great guy. Right now, as 1 write this story, feeling great warmth and affection for the senator, it seens impossible that he bilked the people of his district out of $3 million. EJN 71 KTM.
