Thursday, February 14, 1985 The Pendulum Page 7 ^ Jansen uses height to advantage Rush continued from page 1 By Mouche Maggio Staff Writer “I am the tallest girl at Elon,” boasts the lanky 6 foot 2 Marleen Jansen. Jansen, a native of the Netherlands, takes advantage of her height by playing on the Golden Girls basketball team. The freshman said she had never played organized basketball, but given her height advantage, she is giving it a try. Jansen said that her father could not afford both school and apartment expenses in her own country. “Anyway,” she added, “I needed to be on my own,” Universities in Holland “do not offer scholarships for basketball,” noted the 20-year old smdent as she brashed her golden bangs away from her blue eyes. The Dutch student first came to the United States last year to judge its citizens for herself. Jansen declared that “people in Holland say Americans are fat and stuck up.” She spent 1983 as a “nanny” in Chapel Hill. In that year, she joined a women’s basketball club. She had become so interested in the sport that she had telephoned local college basketball coaches to announce her availibility. After much deliberation, Jansen decided that Elon was right for her. "I owe my decision to Coach Jackson,” beamed the athlete. “She helped me out a lot.” Through the first dozen games of the season, Jansen received little playing time, but she realized she is still learning how to play the game. Jackson says she has high hopes that Jansen will progress to become an important member of the team in the future . Attending Elon on a basketball and Rotary scholarship, the honors stu dent still has time to work on her favorite hobbies. Tugging on the sleeve of her hot pink mohair sweater, she exclaimed, “I made this in three weeks.” Her other pastimes include sewing and cross-stitching. When she is not on the basketball court, Jansen can be seen in the LRC tutoring French and German. Jansen is fluent in Dutch and English and has taken six years of boUi French and German. She is cur rently taking a course in Spanish. When Jansen graduates with a Journalism degree, she hopes to use her knowledge of several languages many brothers, don’t think you won’t get a bid,” said Rust. “We never cut down a rushee just because we don’t know him. If just one brother knows a rushee, we trust his judgement.” “Always try to keep an open mind while you’re going through rush,” according to Barbie Callahan, rush chairman for Phi Mu. Photo by Steve Pearce to work for an international magazine like National Geographic possibly writing feature stories. When asked about the major dif ference between her hometown, Heiloo, and Elon College, Jansen contended that college students in the United States have a different way of socializing. “People are more in terested in one another in Holland,’ said Jansen.“ Here,” she com mented, “if you drop dead on the street, nobody cares.” I She thinks that alcohol consump tion may have something to do with this attitude. “Americans drink too much liquor and they don’t know how to control themselves,” main tained Jansen. Holland has no drink ing age, and Jansen said, “That’s dumb,” as she sipped on her glass of grapefruit juice. She surmised that the minimum age for drinking challenges young people to want to rebel by consuming mass quantities. ! Regarding her height , Jansen ! recalled, “I used to think I was ug ly; I thought I was terrible.’ However, she now says, “I like be ing tall and I’m not going to get shorter anyway.” SlUSKT CFFCKTUNrriES We are looking for girls interested in being counselors - activity instructors in a private eirls camp located in Hendersonville, N.C.
