Vaughann Harper (regional director) Business frat to charter By Bobby Drakeford Special to the Pendulum The national business fraterni ty, Alpha Kappa Psi is seeking to establish a chapter at Elon Col lege. According to regional direc tor Vaughan Harper, “Elon Col lege can receive its charter at the national convention in St. Louis this August.” Harper, who pledged at Virginia Polytechnical Institute in 1971, is the director of all graduate and undergraduate chapters in North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland and Washington, D.C. In early November, Harper spoke to business administration professor Dr. Martin Shotz- berger, other business faculty and students about the potential benefits of the establishing a chapter. Among those he listed were future professional and social contacts and the opportunity to belong to one of the nations most prestigious business fraternities. Shotzberger, who is the advisor for the Elon College Professional Business Club (ECPBC) which is the colony name for the potential Alpha Kappa Psi chapter, agrees with Harper. Shotzberger also said he feels that Alpha Kappa Psi can offer students national recognition. Shot/berger made the proposal that Elon’s Business Students Communications Committee (BSCC) become the nucleus of the Elon College Professional Business Club. Tina Lewis and Cyndi Lawson of the B.S.C.C., along with junior executive of ficers Bobby' Drakeford, Andy Hall, Brooks Hinson and Brond- wyn Walker, are now serving as officers. Tammy Franklin, who ■ was president of the B.S^C.C., resigned due to lack of time. These officers and 20 to 25 other accounting, business and economics majors are meeting Thursdays at 4 p.m. in Alamance 301 and attending pledge meetings Sundays at 6:30 p.m. in Alamance 207. Fraternity district director Skip Corbett of Greensboro is serving as the pledge director. Before beginning the pledge in structions, Corbett asked everyone to state their name and give their reasons for wanting to join AKP. Responses ranged from “wanting to be part of a fraternity” to “because it will look good on a resume.” Corbett explained that each pledge must pass an exam on the history of the fraternity, attend the pledge and business meetings. Trustees continued from page 1 According to the Development Committee, pledges exceeded the $5.7 million goal for the PRIDE II campaign, and reached nearly $7 million. The Kresge challenge also surpassed its goal of $750,000 and reached nearly $900,000. Both campaigns will end on May 30, 1985. Cut-backs in federal aid will af fect 600 of the 1,004 students who are receiving such aid. Each of these 600 students would lose approximately $2,(XX) each year. At least 300 of them would not have enough funds to continue J-’. 6,.1i ■» their education at Elon College under such conditions. The board voted to invest in the Vienna Hotel in London for students who plan to participate in an expanded study abroad pro gram. Elon will purchase 25 per cent of the hotel by investing ap proximately $500,00 in endow ment funds. These funds must support projjerty that will return monetary profits and possible capital appreciation. Elon and Guilford will own 50 percent of the Vienna Hotel, and will have access to it from September I , through February 28. The Vien na Hotel group will own the other 50 percent of the hotel and use it from March 1 through August 30. Negotiations and bidding will continue until April 6, 1985, then the owner will make a decision. The Board of Trustees elected the following new members: Noel Lee Allen of Raleigh, Bar bara D. Bass of Richmond, VA, WUliam A. Hawks of Burlington, James W. Maynard of Burl ington, David E. Pardue, Jr. of Burlington, Amy Leonore Burch of Woodstock, VA (youth trustee), and Rex G.
