United Way coordinators seek student participation Jy Frank Isley 4ews Editor With the United Way Fund taising Drive already under way n Alamance County, Elon Col- ege is also gearing up for its an- lual United Way effort, beginn- ng with an organizational neeting for the student fund rais- ng effort on Sept. 16 at 4:30 ).m. in the Long Student Center «cond floor lounge. Dr. Linda Weavil, Assistant ’rofessor of Office Administra- ion and Business Administration, s the director of Elon’s United iVay Drive. She said this year’s goal is 58,200, a 10 percent increase 5ver last year’s goal. Greeks and other student organizations raised over $900 last year, with Sigma Pi winning the trophy for most money col lected by an organization. However, Weavil says most contributions came from faculty and staff and she would like to see more student participation. Assistant Dean of Student Af fairs Valarie Luko, who is work ing with SGA President Shane Jones in coordinating the student effort for fund raising, agreed with Weavil. “We’re not looking at increas ing the amounts of money as much as we are in getting more people involved,” said Luko. Of the 48 organizations recognized by the college, seven contributed to last year’s drive and only one residence hall out of 20 contributed Luko said. She said both she and Jones would like to see some fund rais ing coordinated with Homecom ing in the form of such things as marathons. The United Way contributes to 34 local agencies, many of which can be utilized by Elon students. According to Weavil and Luko, these agencies include Rape Crisis Alliance, Suicide and Crisis Services of Alamance, the Christian Counseling Center, Drug and Alcohol Abuse Ser vices, the Mental Health Associa tion and the Y.M.C.A.
