The Pendulum Thursday, September 19,19851 Senator at Elon could he an asset Tim McDowell, director of public information and publications for Elon, has been nominated to replace John Jordan as senator from the 21st state Senate District. McDowell will maintain his position at Elon, as legislation is a part-time job. He has served in the House of Representatives for eight years, and he said the Senate sessions coincide with the House ses sions. Therefore, his schedule at Elon will not have to be altered. Dr. Jo Watts Williams, vice president for development at Elon, said she thinks McDowell was a good choice for the position. “I’m glad to have someone with his capabilities represent this district,” she said. “He had a good record in the House, and this is an opportunity (for him) to con tinue his service.” Of course, there are lobbyists who represent private higher education, but having a state senator on campus could be an asset to some degree. Having a senator on campus will perhaps give students more of a voice in legislation. And having private college employees in the Senate may be the first step toward freezing the gap between the costs of attending private and state institutions in North Carolina. If nothing else, it certainly is good publicity for Elon, something which is especially important now. —By Jane Kidwell Guest Column I, ^ \ M f ' 4 1 1 Vl Letter to the Editor Central America contras deserve help Student UTges involvement By John Edwards The contras in Central America deserve as much help as possible firom their allies, and they are get ting it, especially from the United States. A few weeks ago, the Salvadoran Air Force received twelve helicopters from the United States in order to protect them from guerrillas and also destroy them. The helicopters come with 7.62-caliber machine guns and rocket pods. The guns and rockets can be controlled by the pilot of the helicopter. Hopefully this will impress Congress into giving more aid to the contras and helping them even more, especially in the CIA department. And finally because of Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega’s actions seeking more military aid from Russia, the U.S. Congress, who at first vetoed $14 million aid against the contras, has made a complete turn THEN CAME ALBXANPER, WHOPRAWK HIM5ELFT0 PEATH IN THE PALACE around and rewarded them near ly twice that much in the amount of $27 million. The Sandinistas and their com munist friends had better watch it. Even though the Sandinistas have an army of 110,000 to the con tras’ 17,000, the United States is making sure that the contras are getting as much aid as possible. We do not need anymore com munists at our back door. (Note: I do not want the continuance of the right wing death squads to continue. Even though the Col lege Republicans organization supports the contras, they want the death squads to stop.) I'M NOT SURE UJHAT MAPPENEP after that To the junior class: Welcome back to Elon.
