Thursdsy, SGptsmbsr 26, 1985 Th© Psndulum Other Opinions Parallels exist between Vietnam, Central America • Seth B. Pomeroy iff Writer During the past week at Elon, nsiderable attention was given a three-day program focusing Central America. Through the nsiderable efforts of pro- isors, administrators and ;anizers, a dozen programs I re staged for the edification of II community. ' iVe watched actors Peter Gould i Stephen Stearns portray a rsonal view of the El Iv^dorian peasant; State partment spokesman William iiofield explain the Reagan ad- nistration’s policies toward the ;ion; and economist Robert G, lliams discuss the historical ;s of land in Central nmerica—to mention a.feyv. The outcome of this '‘Teach- was twofold. First, (anizers attemptel to;bring,to a deeper understanding of Cen- I America—a view that some im we do not get from our isident. Congress, and the *'s media. Secondly,'by draw- ; on this knowledge, it is hoped "t we better understand what jses human misery and imately produces the revolt jinst those who conspire linst the masses of people, the Teach-In focused on the ;ision-making process of our Vemment and asked whether nerica is going down the same h it did when we became en- .gled in Vietnam. In other irds, is our support of El Ivadorian President Duarte and ■ Nicaraguan “contras” com- •able to our aid of South Viet- n in the 1960s? fhe question is being debated many placs in our society: the lite House, Congress, college yipuses, institutes and “think- iks.” generally speaking, those (lericans who support President agan’s policies have long kught the question to be repug- it. The “hawks,” as they are 3wn, want little to do with an sge of Central America as isibly the next Vietnam. On the ler hand, those who have ticized President R'^agan fear t perhaps we are being drawn 0 another foreign strife, rhe next question deserves ne attention. First, we examine o our enemy was and is. In the :tnam campaign, we lost .000 American lives and lions of dollars attempting to p the communist North Viet- it enemy was” supplied and supported by the Chinese and Soviets. Today in Central America we support, among others, El Salvadoran and Nicaraguan Con tras. Both forces fight either directly or indirectly against another Soviet satellite— Nicaragua. Therefore, in both cases, we supported or support anti-Soviet allies. The country erred in assisting the anti-communist forces in South Vietnam, why should the President and Congress vote to do it on another continent today?
