September 26, 1905 S ports Guilford routed in opener Elon faces defending national champion Eagles Elon’s football team takes on defending NAIA national cham pions Carson-Newman at 7 p.m. Saturday in Jefferson City, Tenn. The Fightin’ Christians, com ing off an opening 30-10 win over Guilford last Saturday night in Greensboro, defeated the Eagles last season in Burlington Memorial Stadium 31-29. Carson-Newman had been rank ed No. 1 nationally going into that game. Carson-Newman also won the 1983 national title. Coach Ken Sparks’ team lost its 1985 opener to currently top-ranked Central State (Okla.) 28-9 and rebound ed two weeks ago to defeat Georgetown (Ky.) 17-12. The Eagles return only four defensive starters and five offensive starters from last year’s championship team. The Eagles, traditionally a stronger running team than a passing team, will likely see Elon run the ball more than it has in re cent years. The Fightin’ Chris tians ground out 375 yards Tishing against Guilford. Elon’s 'quarterbacks Mike Brodowicz and Garrett Robinson completed nine of 19 passes against the Quakers, with Brodowicz con necting with wide receiver Stanley Hairston on a 25-yard touchdown pass. Brodowicz, starting his first game in 3 seasons as a member of the squad, had his first two passes of the game intercepted. The second enabled Guilford’s Rick Herrin to put the hosts ahead 3-0 on a 45-yard field goal. But Elon came back to take the lead for good with a 3-yard touchdown run by Jonas Davis. The visitors also got a 45-yard field goal by Paul Mullen and the Brodowicz-to-Hairston TD pass for a 17-3 halftime lead. The second half was mainly a defensive struggle, with Elon playing many of its reserves. Brodowicz gave Elon a 24-3 lead in the third quarter on a five- yard TD run. Guilford scored its TD with 33 seconds remaining in the game. But on the first play after the ensuing kickoff, Elon’s freshman running back Eric Herndon, on his first carry of the season, bolted 79 yards for a TD to make the final score 30-10. Davis wound up with 102 yards Soccer team (5-1) plays High Point Saturday By E. B. Addison Staff Writer The Fightin’ Christians soccer team, now 5-1 overall, is 3-0 in NAIA District 26 play and 2-0 in Carolina’s Conference action. Elon has outshot its opponents 148 to 42, averaging almost four goals per game to less than one goal per game for the opponents. Elon will host High Point this Saturday at 2 p.m. in the only game of the week. The three- game home stand continues into the following week with dates versus Pembroke State on Wednesday and Lenoir-Rhyne on Saturday. Last Tuesday, the Christians came away with a 5-1 win against the Pfeiffer Falcons. “The Falcons are a much im proved team over last year,” commented coach Steve Ballard. “We are happy to get the win as always, but especially down there. The Falcons are going to _cau^>?op*£ ET^lerns for some_p^ the other teams in the league.” The Christians were led by Glenn Gess, who scored two goals and assisted on another goal. Last Fri day Elon faced tough Atlantic Christian. At the end of regula tion time the score was tied 1-1, but Elon won with a goal in the final two minutes of overtime. Elon’s Gess broke down the left sideline and scored the win ning goal unassisted. “We are really in good shape right now,” Ballard said follow ing the win. “I thought we had a fine game tonight from Gess especially, and also from senior Andy Schaefer and goalie Kip Rackley. Rackley has three shutouts thus far.” Elon’s freshman forward Mike Wessels said, “Most of our goals have been scored in the second half of the games. I feel that we work well together, but we need to work harder. We need to start hard from the beginning of the game.” Wessels has been doing - his-parh fle- has- five goals-and- three assists so far for this season. -M '8S«w •- I Photos by Stuart White DEFENSIVE STOPPER: Linebacker John Mickens (48) tackles Guilford QB Donnie Redman.
