The victory moved the Fightin’ Christians into sole possession of second place in the SAC-8 with a 3-1 league record behind Mars Hill at 4-0. Elon hosts Gardner-Webb at 2 p.m. Saturday in Burlington Memorial Stadium for the annual Parent’s Day game. The Indians come in at 1-3 in the league, 4-3 overall, after losing a tough 13-7 battle with Carson-Newman last Saturday. Last year the Christians walloped G-W 53-7 in their big gest offensive explosion of the season. Quarterback Garrett Robinson, in his first start of the season, led the Christians in what head coach Macky Carden called “a nearly perfect first half of football.” He rushed eight times for 106 yards—including a 62-yarder in the first quarter—and tossed a TD pass to end Stanley Haley. Jonas Davis, held to a mere 39 yards in Oct. 19’s loss to Presbyterian, came back with 137 yards on 26 carries for two TDs against the Indians. Fullback Mike O’Lari also netted 69 yards on 10 carries, scoring the game’s first TD on a 13-yard first-quarter run through the center of the Catawba defense. Elon led 17-0 before the visitors could get on the board with a 29-yard field goal by Ran dy Brown. The only other Catawba threat in the first half was stymied when Brown’s field goal attempt was blocked just before the half. By then Elon was ahead 24-3. Carden used reserves liberally in the second half. Quarterback Perry Cuda saw his first extensive action of the season, completing four of eight passes and directing the Christians to their final score, a 26-yard Paul Mullen field goal in the third period. Elon defensive back Jake Welborn was named SAC-8 Player of the Week for making eight solo tackles and picking off two Catawba passes. Linebacker Jack Arnold continued his sterl ing play, with seven solo tackles and 10 assists. “This was our best game of the year,” Carden said. ”lf we’d played with this much fire at PC, we might have won down there, too.” The victory, coupled with Newberry’s loss to Georgia Southern, moved the Christians back ahead of Newberry in the all-important NAIA national poll. Newberry had been ranked sixth last week, one notch ahead of Elon.
