Page 2 The Pendulum "liTnursdiaiy, November 7, fg Editorials -m »:w v>^ More lights needed to make campus safe Tmo Elan oo-eds have reportedly been attacked on the Eton cam pus in reoeat weeks. The fiia attack took place on Oct. IS between Hantoe's and the Oaks. The second attack was on Oct. 23 at the old track 1^ a man of the sanK description as the first assailant. Hopefully the administration will not attempt to keep these reports quet. it is had publicity for the college, but the students need to be infannod of the attacks. It is also likely that pubhcity will subdue the aoackcr or attackers. Maay fexnak snidmts go out alone after dark without thinking twice of possible dai^er. They walk home from the library and the bars and even jog at night. These co-eds need to realize that this is dangerous even in a small town like Elon College. And it is not neoessarily safe for giils to even go out in pairs. For instance, several mondis ^o, two University of North Carolina co-eds were abducted near the Chapel Hill campus, and one of diem was murdered. The lighting situation on can^Mis and in the town will have to be unproved before the danger is reduced. With the recent reversion to Easiem Standard Time, it is dark by 6 p.m., and it is impossible to c«poa female students to not go anywhere after that time. Thus, it would be a good investment for the school to appropriate funds for a bener lighdi^ system. Bui until somethii^ is done about the current situation, female stwdcMs should be extremely cautious and use good judgment if they must go ou after dark. .fiv Jane Kidwell Student defends Greeks To the editor In your last issue €»f The Pendulum you printed an editorial entitled "Money far Gfcek court should go elsewhere.” In this editorial you noted $600,000 that were authorized to develop the area north of Bakatsias Field for six proposed Greek houses. Your ednorial daimed neglect for two groups of students, those frcduncn in the Best Western and those handicapped students atten- dii^ Elon. You fi^ as if the finances used on Greek houses could be better spent elsewhere. I do not doubt that these are valid concerns, both groups do re quire attention; but so, too. does the Greek system. The Greek syocm at Elon is 10 oiganiztions strong, entailing about 400 students. Elan's Gieek system is strong compared to other schools of comparable siae. and is becoming stronger still. Elan's Greek system contributes greatly to Elon in all fashions: s|witually, financiUy, charitably md in recruiting, as well as socially. Throi^hart the years the Gredi system, the community, and the school have had many difficulties involving the Greek houses and par ties, noise and liner. The proposed Greek court will alleviate many of diesc problems. This is not to say these other concerns are invalid. These are canoenis and should be looked into and acted upon. Something is bciqg done far the Greeks at Elon, and this started out of a valid Do not oandemn it because wrongs still exist. I fxl IhM the college has bi^un working with the Greek system, Elon will continue to w«1c with it not only for its siae bw also far the potential good k can do for the college and the Dwayne Mirelli Tau Kappa EpsOon I TMiNkrTS AN ILLUSION lUajAWRnERNBEPS A fi\kiCV 5TVPI0 & lU l!J 9 ■ B A lURlTEK POESNY NEEP A PLACED THE OCEAN OR W THE MOUNTAINS T sure am g/ad 'tiTey decided iro'ttja'n on ifx>se lights. Student disappointed with editoria To the Editor: The editorial concerning the new Greek housing a{^roved recently by the Board of Trustees was irresponsible and was not well thought-out. I was also sur prised and disappointed that the editorial was not signed. The Pendulum has displayed editorial responibility in the past by hav ing the authors of e^torials and letters to the editor credited for their opinions. I hope that this was an oversight this time, and not an indication that the author does not wish to take responsi bility for his or her opinion. The editorial stated that the funds being used to c(»)stnict Greek housing could be better us ed to build a new dormitory, and end the need to house students at Best Western motel. The author of the editorial did not do his “homework” on this point. Each spring, thirty or forty spaces are open on campus. It would be ludicrous for the college to spend SOME OF OUR BEST BOOKS HAVE BEEN WRITTEN IN VERV HUMBLE PLACES money on a new dorm that wooki only create more empty space on campus in the sprii^. Also, tiK Greek bouses will fiee up same ^»ce for non-Greek students to live in on campus. One point made in the editoria was valid; That the coD^ needs to have better facilities for han dicapped students. However.Ido not bdieve that die nmiber of handicapped students at Elan validates a large expendatmre of money at this time (paiticnlarly $600,000). The coU^ and board have made a good decision in build^ new Greek housing. TIk ttvee existing fiatnntty booses are dil^idated fire hazards anrf can not be considered proper hovsang for anyone. Fraternities and sororities on this campus are vdally impoftant to the scbool ani they can thrive even more with proper houai^ fsicilities.
