Page 2 The Pendulum Thursday, November 21,1905 Editorials Rumors heightening fears following attacks As a result of two attempted sexual assaults on Elon’s campus in October and the more recent reports and arrest of an alleged exhibi tionist on campus, feelings verging on hysteria abound among students. Rumors have been spreading across campus that an actual rape did occur last week. But, Ronald Klepcyk, dean of Student Affairs, said that no rape occurred. Klepcyk also said that the arrest of this person charged with indecent exposure is seemingly unrelated to the two earlier assaults on co-eds. The rumors which are circulating are causing much unrest among female students; and the more nervous they are, the more gullible they are to further rumors. Dean Klepcyk has already sent notices to all campus residents about what has taken place and what precautions should be taken. He will certainly inform all students if a rape does occur. In the meantime, students should try to keep the rumors in check for the sake of everyone’s peace of mind. This is not to say that danger does not exist. It exists here in the town of Elon College just like anywhere else. And anytime a woman goes out alone after dark, she leaves herself open to danger. If co eds would be sensible and take advantage of the escort services available through several of the fraternities and campus security in stead of going out alone, the danger would be greatly reduced. -By Jane Kidwell Letter to the Editor Klepcyk: ‘No rape on campus’ To the editor: The recent assault and indecent exposure incidents on campus have generated legitimate concern among women students particularly. However, some rumors persist which may be causing unneccessary alarm. This is the actual sequence of events. On Oct. 15 and Oct. 23, there were two reported assaults on female students. In both cases the women escaped uninjured. Police suspect the same individual in both ' incidents and have a composite profile of the suspect, but have not as yet made an arrest. On Nov. 12 a series of indecent exposure in cidents were reported within a short period of time. An individual has been arrested and charged in connection with those incidents, which police believe are unrelated to the previous events. There has been no rape on campus. This rumor appears to have been started in connection with one of the indecent exposure incidents, but it is unfounded. No rape has been reported to the Elon Police, the Office of Safety and Security or any member of die Student Af fairs or residence life staff. In response to the unusual events of the past month, some addi tional security measures have been taken and these have been widely publicized. Telephone numbers for security and the escort service have been mailed to all resident students. For the benefit of commuters, the numbers are as follows: Security pager: 229-8468. (After dialing, you will hear a beep. Give Psanuis* by ChartM Sehufez tc Aim dffum. roV4IG The Pendulum Staff /IKID 50 UlTHKJOTKlNlerO STUDEMTS tET^ THg WeiE-KEKP rv4 your name, location and the nature of the emergency. Repeat the message.) Escort service: Sigma Phi Epsilon—584-2412; Pi Kappa Phi 538-3159, 538-3160, 538-6938. Security may also be called to escort students. Use the pager number. To contact the Elon police, call 584-1310. Recent stories in the press have been somewhat exaggerated, and there is no need for panic. There is, however, reason for concern and reason to continue to exercise proper precaution in traveling around the campus, particularly in the evening hours. Please contact the Office of Student Affairs at extension 2218 for clarification of the accuracy of any rumors you might hear. With proper precaution by everyone and the dUigence of the police, It IS my hope that those responsible for these recent incidents will be apprehended soon.
