Other members of the Love fami ly and bo^d members were also present. Elon Trustee Emily Preyer accepted the gift on behalf of the college. Love said $225,000 of the donation is payable immediately. The balance is to be paid at a rate of $100,000 annually within 10 years. President Fred Young said the gift signifies a new chapter in Elon College history. “It’s a significant gift in its magnitude,” said Young. “This amount of financial support will have an im- Messiah* highlights hristmas calendar mediate and a long-term impact on the quality of education that the young men and women who attend this institution receive.” Young added that such an en dowment “will help develop bet ter programs to serve the young men and women who attend and to give further momentum to that quality.” “Constantly increasing quality is one of the primary causes of the 40 percent increase in applica tions in the last two years,” said Young, “and a rather substantial increase in the qualr*" of the students who are entering the in stitution.” The business administration major is the largest academic pro gram at Elon and involves 14 faculty members. The money will be used for faculty salary enhancement; student scholar ships, grants and loans; stipends for research assistants; and the purchase of library resources, supplies and equipment. The master’s degree program in business administration, which was established last year, will also benefit from the Lxsve Foun dation gift. “The Martha and Spencer Love Foundation has made an in vestment in this community, just as the benefactors did so many times when they invested in new textile operations in this county,” Young said. “I am convinced that Mr. and Mrs. Love would share See Grant, page 4 ky William Poston ‘Ipecial to The Pendulum Tas Christmas approaches, the students, faculty and staff of Elon vollege are looking forward to spending the holidays with their 'Imilies. A traditional highlight of the Christmas season at Elon is the per- ^rmance of the Messiah, which will be at 8 tonight in Whitley ^ditorium. The Elon College Community Orchestra, directed by Dr. David Bragg, and the Elon College Chorus, directed by Dr. “itephen Ten Eyck, will give the concert, which is free and open to file public. ^ The caroling that took place in front of Alamance last Christmas ^ fill be happening again this year. The Elon choir, along with choirs ® rom community churches, will sing from 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday. *' Elon fraternities and sororities have been getting involved in the “ Christmas spirit. '' The brothers of Pi Kappa Phi assisted the town’s Appearance Com- ^ nission decorate street lights along Williamson Avenue last Friday. ® Uso, Sigma Phi Epsilon brothers have been caroling in the community hif week. And the brothers of Sigma Pi collected canned foods for the Burlington Good Shepherd Soup Kitchen last Sunday. LThe sisters of Alpha Sigma Alpha went Christmas caroling at Twin ikes Retirement Coimnunity and have collected toys, clothes and •^ood for the needy. Zeta Tau Alpha sisters have also collected can- •fied food and clothes for a needy family in the community. ;■ .
