Out of place change of pace
E)espite the cold weather, Elon’s version of water polo, played in innertubes, is a favorite of the in
tramural particpants. This is the only Intramural activity that is held during winter term. Nightly,
teams from fraternities, sororities and dormitories turn out seven member squads to splash in the Beck
f)ool, vying for victory.
Lady’s trounce Pheiffer, 74-55

The Elon women’s basketball
team ended an eight-game losing
streak last Saturday night by
trouncing Pfeiffer, 74-55. The
win lifted Elon’s overall record to
2-9 (1-4 in the Carolinas Con
ference and 1-6 in District 26).
Freshman Mae Haith again
paced the Christians with 18
points. She is the team’s top
scorer at 14.3 points per game.
Also scoring in double figures for
Elon were Theresa Sandell and
Lisa Hairston with 12 apiece and
Lisa Briggs with 11.
Coach Jackie Meyers’ club was
outrebounded by Pfeiffer 37-35
but forced the visitors into 28 nir-
novers. Elon led 50-26 at the half
and forged a 30-point led in the
final period before the reserves
took over.
The Christians lost to Mars Hill
68-54 on Jan. 9 in their first game
since the holidays. It was only the
second home game of the season
for the team, which opened the
year with nine straight on the
road.
The team does not play at home
again until Jan. 27, when Pem
broke State University comes to
town.
Grapplers fall at State duals
Elon’s Kent Pond won three
matches in the N.C. State Univer
sity dual wrestling tournament
last Saturday, but the Christians
lost to all three of their heavily
favored opponents.
State topped the Christians
24-15, Virginia Tech won 35-11
and Pembroke State triumphed
45-7,
The host Wolfpack took four
matches to win the tournament
title.
Jan Frederick of Elon defeated
wrestlers from Strate and Pem
broke and drew a third match
with a VPI opponent. The Chris
tians’ Scott Crater also won twice
against grapplers from State and
Tech but lost to his Pembroke
opponent.
Elon is 1-3 in dual matches for
the season. The next home match
is Jan. 29 against Georgia Tech
and Davidson.
