Several Elon faculty, staff and members of the com munity held signs and balloons saying, “Love your neighbor” on street comers along the march route. Thejnarch route in Burlington was comprised of a seven-block rectangle on Front, Worth, Maple and Spring jptreets. “Most of the people from the com- mmunity were there out of curiosity, not to support the KKK,” said Dr. James Pickens, associate pro fessor of psychology. “This march is the first one in 25 or 30 years, according to Burlington police,” he added. “There are still people and students who want to stand for what is good and beautiful,” said Dr Carole Chase, associate professor of religion and chair of the department of religion. “In the 1970s students were active in social pro tests,” [’she continued. “In the 1980s it seems the ma jor and the best paying job are the concerns. Photo by Scott Martin (Daily Times-News) Kappa Alpha loses charter, charged with pledge hazing By Scott Wood Emphasis Editor Kappa Alpha fraternity has been suspended from Elon College until the fall of 1987 for what schtlol officials have said is “hazing” of the Kappa Alpha fall 1986 pledge class. The incident which resulted in this action ap- parendy was wittnessed by college President Fred Young when it occured last month on the athletic practice field behind North Dorm. The fraternity’s charter has also been removed by the Kappa Alpha national organization, also un til next fall. Members of the fraternity contend they were doing nothing more than leading their pledges through calisthenics on the evening in question. The penalties for the KA brothers and pledges will varry according to whether each fwrson chooses an administrative hearing or goes before the Elon Hear ing Board, which consists of three students and two faculty members. Some of the KA members and pledges have already choosen the administrative hearing; these students have been suspended from Winter Term See Fraternity, page 5 Burroughs’ crowning highlights Homecoming By Denese DeJerf Staff Writer Beth Burroughs, representing Tau^ppa Epsilon, was crowned 1986 Homecoming Queen during halftime of the Elon-Newberry football game last Saturday. Anita Butler, representing Kap pa Sigma, was first runner-up, and [Lee Ann Strittmatter, representing Sigma Phi Epsilon, was second runner-up. Homecoming Week at Elon, which carried the theme “Pro hibition under the Oaks,“ was packed with excitement this year. Events were held each evening, ranging from Casino Night to the Talent Show. Comedian Earl Okin kicked off Homecoming Week ’86. He per formed Monday night in Whitley Auditorium. On Tuesday evening. Casino Night was held on the second floor of Long Student Center. The Large Lounge, TV room and a conference room were set up with games ranging from blackjack to craps. Tau Kappa Epsilon frater nity brought in the most chips of the night. Interviewing of the Homecom ing Queen candidates was con ducted by Chester Robinson, West area coordinator, on Wednesday night in Whitley Auditorium. The Men’s Leg Contest followed this, in which Tony Settles came out as the winner A pie- throwing auc tion was held immediately after wards. The highest bidding took place when Todd Tkylor was the target. Twenty dollars was spent for the pies that he was hit with. The Fund Raising Carnival was held in East Gym Thursday night. Campus organizations with Homecoming Queen represen tatives set up various games and booths. Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority had the most business of the night, selling baked goods.
