The mishap occured aroimd 1 a.m. Saturday J)uth of Gibsonville, at the intersection of N.C. and 1-85. According to an article in the Burlington Dai- Times-News, a report prepared by Trooper I.E. lullard of the Highway Patrol said the car ran off lie road, hit a bridge railing, then dropped down fom N.C. 61 onto 1-85. Two other Elon students were injured in the Lreclc. The driver, Robert McClellan, 19, of Wood- |ridge, Va., who lives in 202 Sloan dorm, was ated for minor injuries and released from Moses Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro. The other pudent, Robert Stadnicki, who lives in 230 Sloan «rm, was admitted to Moses Cone and underwent lurgery on his foot last'tuesday, according to Dean pf Student Affairs Ron Klepcyk. McClellan, who was driving a 1978 Datsun, was tharged with driving while impaired and careless pnd reckless driving. Vanderwerff, director of the freshman composi tion program and the college-wide writing program, has been nam ed dean of Greensboro College. V^derwerff said, “There were three finalist to get the position. One was a college president and the other was a college dean. 1 was very excited to leam that I had received the position. I have worked at Greensboro College before, and I know the faculty and the college surroundings.” Greensboro College is a private Liberal Arts college with an enrollment of about 600 students. Elon President Fred Young said, “We have mixed emotions about her leaving Elon. We are happy that she has received such a leadership position, and it’s for tunate for Greensboro College, but we regret to see her go. We do appreciate the leadership that she has provided to our whole college. 1 feel that it is a good reflextion on Elon to see her fill such a leadership position”. Young added. Vanderwerff designed and developed many programs here at Elon. She said, “I designed and implemented a new sequence for freshman composition English 111 and 112. It takes the current com position theory into practice with sequences involving students in reading, writing, thinking,speak ing, and listening. The English 112 focus is critical thinking as students deliberate about crucial contemporary issues.” Her students and colleagues say Vanderwerff has done an excep tional job in class as well. The students in her American Literature class last semester en joyed having Vanderwerff as their teacher. On the class evaluation sheets, students wrote their thoughts about her and the class.
