The Pendulum Volume XIII, Number 26 Thursday, May 7, i9iJ Philbeck elected SGA president risjk ifBip I' / Heydt Philbeck By Aleta Sinkfield Staff Writer The Student Government Association elections came to an end last week and rising junior Heydt Philbeck was elected president. Other winners of the election were Brad Bauhof (vice-president) and Mike Allen (secretary). Philbeck’s opponents for the election were Darrin Smith, who was this year’s vice president, and Tom Mayes, who ran for the same posi tion last year. As an upcoming junior, Philbeck sees a bright future for SGA and has a few projects in store. He said, “I’m feirly confident about holding this position because of my two years experience in the student senate”. His record shows that he has not missed a meeting during this two year span. One proposal that Philbeck hopes to accomplish is getting the school some tyjje of shuttle bus for transportation. Philbeck said, "The idea came about when Scott Ward, Brad Bauhof and myself attended a na tional conference a month ago in New Orleans. I noticed that other schools had adopted the idea and helpful the system was for them. Since more people are moving off campus, there will be a need for transportation.” Another objective Philbeck hopes to accomplish is the upgrading of Elon’s entertainment. With a nine percent increase in SGA’s budget, he hopes to get a variety of bands and comedy shows. He also hopes to get better advertisement for upcoming events. Philbeck wants students to feel free to speak with him concerning any issue. Therefore he has constituted an open door policy allowing room for new ideas. Unlike other SGA presidents, Philbeck plans to attend faculty meetings in order to speak up on student issues directly. lABCs Gibson will address '87 graduates By Greg Zaiser Staff Writer Charles Gibson, co-host of ABC’s Good Morn ing America, will be the featured speaker at Elon’s 97th commencement exercises on May 23.
