2 THre PCNbulUM SUB’s Proposals for the Upcoming Year ' by Amy Andrews Staff Writer Elon's Student Union Board, SUB. has several goals for the 1987-88 year which are being * worked on. according to SUB president Mauricio Arraya. One of SUB's goals is to in crease participation in the ac tivities planned by the group. "Our main concern we're trying to work with is the lack of par ticipation," said Arraya. Arraya added that SUB is pro viding a g(Kxl quality of pro grams, but people aren’t turning out tor them. He said that the turnout is bet ter than la.st year, but there still is a long way to go. “Students are missing out on a I lot of g(Hxl and entertaining pro grams simple because they are chixising to sit in their nxims and complain about what is there to do," said David Atkins. Director of Student Activities. "Between SUB. Lyceum. Cultural Programs Office, Stu- , dent Govcrnmenl Association, 'Student Activities office. Religious life, RHA. and Greek i organizations, there are rarely any evenings that there are not some programs on the Elon campus." Atkins said. Arraya sees this year as a new beginning for SUB. “We're begin ning to take ott," he said, “but we can't do it alone. We need to see more participation." SUB's second goal for this year was to increase the group's budget. SUB's budget last year was $41,200. according to Atkins. This year's budget is $55,000, but SI7.(X)0 of that has been set aside to possibly bring one "main at traction" to Elon, Arraya said. The SUB budget is divided over six committees, Arraya explained. Those committees are contem porary music, special events, stage performance, audio-visual performance, hospitality, and publicity. Arraya said that a lot of the budget goes for publicity, since another goal is to better inform students of what SUB is doing. Arraya said that he views SUB as a company in tht its main con fer is to satisfy a customer, which in this case is the Elon student btxly. "We're open to any sugges tion," Arraya said, adding that SUB is in the process of making questionaires and surveys for students to fill out. Arraya said that another of SUB's goals was to provide one major event. “We've found a lot of conflicts with providing only one major at traction." he said. Atkins explained that when dealing with any large bands, there are problems. He explain ed that the band. The Outfield recently cancelled their entire tour and left some sch(x)ls in the southeast at the last minute, without programs. Arraya said that it may be possi ble for a large-name group to be scheduled at Elon. but SUB. SGA. and the administration would have to make the best decision. “If we don’t bring The Out field, it's because we felt like it wasn’t worth it," Arraya said. “We felt like we could invest that much money in something better." Arraya said that when he and II other people went to a convention in Alabama on October 8-11, they realized that the groups that have been performing at Elon are “top quality." He said that Greeks and other members of Elon organiza tions were among those who went to the convention.Through this they could see the quality of enter tainment that SUB provides and tell their friends about those programs. Another important goal of SUB’s is to work closer with SGA. “We need to work, all of us. together," Arraya said. “We can make a lot of thiijgs happen, but Elon Wins Second Collegiathon Competition Elon College won the Catawba College Collegiathon golf match Thursday, bringing the school to first place in the overall team stan dings. Mars Hill College placed second; Catawba, third; Presbyterian, fourth; and Newberry, fifth. The match was held at Rolling Hills Golf Club in Salisbury. After twt) events, Catawba is ranked second; Mars Hill, third; Presbyterian, fourth; and Newberry, fifth. Dr. Dan Brown, originator and director of the Collegiathon, said the participants have already developed a camaraderie that is gratifying. "'When Dr. Lowder- milk placed the first gold medal around the neck of an Elon stu dent, a girl from another college could be heard .saying, ‘Go. Elon.’" he said. "That reflects the kind of spirit we want the students to gel from this." The Collegiathon, a contest that Catawba College developed and initiated this year, tests both athletic and intellectual skills of undergraduate students. The next event, a chess sompetition, will be held Nov. 4 in the Cannon Rcxim on the Catawba campus. 2402 S.
