6 Z\)e P€Nt)UluM Entertainment Peacock performance captivating by Katie Mafko Ms. Florence Peacock presented a vocal recital at Elon College Thursday night February 18. Ms Peacock , a soprano, cur rently teaches voice in Chapel Hill and is a frequent soloist at Oberlin College’s Baroque Per formance Institute. After receiv ing a master’s degree in music from Yale University, she went to Indonesia, where she played the Japanese gawelon and studied Japanese classical singing (“nembang”). Ms Peacock has been a soloist in oratorio performances with the Atlanta Symphony and various orchestras and choruses in North Carolina, and she appears regularly in recital in the Southeast. (Information provided by Ms. Peacock). The first of the program was devoted to German composers. Ms. Peacock began the recital with a beautiful Concert Aria by Mozart. The Aria displayed the soprano’s wide vocal range as well as the technical mastery and brilliance of her voice. The second half of the program were poems of French poets set Greensboro Symphony to perform In only its second North American performance, Respighi's “Belkis, Queen of Sheeba" will be the featured musical suite when the Greensboro Symphony Orchestra performs at Elon College on Wednesday, February 24 at 8:15 p.m. Symphony Maestro Paul Anthony McRae is responsible for discovering Respighi suite on a re cent European trip, and its debut will be the highlight of the con cert. Admission is $10.00 or Elon Identification. Tickets are on sale at the Fine Arts Building office. "Belkis, Queen of Sheba” is a four-episode suite based on Respighi’s original ballet, which was written in 1931 for over 1,000 performers. The suite retells musically the story of Belkis’ ar rival in the land of King Solomon in ancient Israel in 1000 B.C. Dreaming of Belkis’ love for him, Solomon sends for her to pay her honor. The sounds and rhythms of harem dancers, Arab drums, and ancient Eastern court splendor are all captured in Respighi’s exotic, energetic music. The Greensboro Symphony will also perform two worLs by Haydn; Brahm’s “Variation on a Theme, Op. 56 A” and “Concer to in E Flat for Trumpet and Or chestra." Well-known trumpet soloist Stephen Burns will be featured in the .. to music. Ms. Peacock has a beautiful , clear voice and she sang songs requiring a wide variety of musical expression. Her accompanist Jane Hawkins played very sensitively, both Ms Peacock and Ms. Hawkins per formed extremely well together. Every selection created a dif ferent mood due to Ms Peacock s dramatic and beautiful voice. She was extremely relaxed on stage and as a result her singing seem ed effortless. This was truly a great performance. BRAVO!
