Thursday, April 21, 1988 p 2 THE PENDULUM Cottrell named head by Cheryl Kem Staff Writer Dr. Allin Cottrell has been nam ed the new head of the Economics department. Dr. Cottrell has been here at Elon since the fall of 1985. He came here as an assistant pro fessor of economics. Dr. Cottrell is from Edinburgh, Scotland, and received his educa tion at Oxford University in England. He then went back to Scotland where he achieved his doctrine at Edinburgh University. Before coming to Elon, Dr. Cot trell worked at Napier College in Edinburgh. When he first came to the states, he was a visiting pro fessor of economic at UNC-Chapel Hill. Dr. Cottrell has big plans for the Economic department here at Elon. He would like to continue the work that was done by Dr. Tiemann. He would also like to ex pand the department and hire more faculty. A large amount of students at Elon are going for business degrees. “A business degree is fine, but you might think of an economics degree”, stated Dr. Cot trell, who feels that some employers are impressed by a degree in economics. Dr. Cottrell would like to en courage more students to “give economics a chance. If you enjcyed it on the introduction level, think about it.” 1988 Orientation Logo Contest -$50 prize if logo is used for 1988 Orientation program -Logos should be in keeping with Centennial theme and directly address the Orientation program. -8 Vi X 11 white paper with black ink must be used. -Open to all students, faculty, and staff. -Entries must be submitted to Office of Student Af fairs, Alamance 122, by 5 p.m. April 29, 1988. -Winning logo becomes the property of Elon College. -Winner will be notified by May 15, 1988. -For more info., contact Jana Lynn Fields Patterson, Office of Student Affairs, ext. 2218 New posiu™,: Dr. is .he ment. Cottrell has been at Elon for almost three years. S.G.A. from page 1 and McEwen Dining Hall house such facilities. Something else to work in favor of these students would be the clearing off of sidewalks during ice or snow storms. The work would be done by any student interested in being paid for clearing walkways. It is “only fair to these handicapped students to have full access during all months,” said Borgstrom. In not having prior experience with SGA, Borgstrom sees the association being viewed as an elitist organization where the students may feel they do not have a say in what is going on. Considering students pay $55, he thinks the student government should be more visible. Therefore, he plans to turn SGA into a “listen ing organization caring for students’ concerns.” This will be done through an open quorum (held semesterly it Whitley) where those students in sterested in voicing their opinion will be welcomed to do so. Alonj with this, there will be an opet door policy allowing students tc stop by during office hours. I N I N G COR tour FIRST STEP TOWARD SUCCESS IS THE ONE YOU COULD TAKE THIS SUMMER.
