John McCutcheon is more than a one-
man folk festival. He is perhaps the most
energetic, versatile and talented figure in
American traditional music today, and au
diences love him.
He will be in concert at the Elon Col
lege Fine Arts Theatre on Wednesday,
September 14 at 8:00 p.m. Tickets are
$5.00 and will go on sale August 24 at the
Fine Arts Building office.
McCutcheon has been called “Virginia’s
rustic renaissance man,” ranging from in
strumentalist, singer-songwriter,
folklorist, and recording artist, to activist,
storyteller and teacher. Yet none of those
descriptions really tell the story of what
happens when McCutcheon performs.
At one moment he is sawing away on a
mournful fiddle, recalling the broken
BLOOM COUNTY
hearts of back country tales; in the next he,
has his audience spellbound with the ofteUi
unfamiliar, but unmistakable sound of thei
hammer dulcimer. ;
(
Acclaimed as the finest hammef
dulcimer player in the world, he brings t6
life this old mountain instrument witlf
beauty and clarity that leave the audience
clamoring for more. ,
No matter what his instrument, the.
power and virtuosity he brings to it make
his performances unforgettable. With ten
albums to his credit, including a Grammy,
nomination and a “Children’s Album of
the Year,” his popularity keeps growing:
as he brings traditional American folk
music into concert halls all over the world.
