Loss to fF'S State costly to Christians by Norman Perduk Sports Editor The Elon College Fightin’ Chris tians football team lost their open ing game of the 1988 season on Saturday, at a rain-drenched Burl ington Memorial Stadium 34-19 to the Wmston-Salem State University Rams, and in the process lost two quarterbacks to possible season en ding injuries. Starting quarterback John Wadsworth and back-up Kelly , Holder had to leave the game on Elon’s first two offensive posses sions, as both players went down on hard hits by Rams’ defenders. Wadsworth, a junior from ' Morehead City, NC suffered a | separated shoulder and is expected to be out for at least four to six weeks. Macky Carden, head coach of the Christians says that he might redshirt Wadsworth to save a year of his athletic eligibility. Holder, a freshman from Mt. Airy, NC had even worse news as he suffered a broken tailbone and had to withdraw from Elon this semester to recover from the injury. This sudden, unexpected turn of Kevin Alderman intercepted a Ken ny Jones pass at the Rams’ 40, and the ball was moved to the 25 on a personal foul penalty. Although Elon failed to get the TD, Paul Mullen kicked a 41-yard field goal to narrow the half-time margin to 21-10 and put the Rams’ within reach. The third quarter was dominated by the defenses of both squads as neither team could sustain a drive. Elon finally scored on a safety when Winston-Salem State halfback Broderick Graves slipped in the end-zone. The quarter end ed on a 38-yard run by Elon fullback Brendon Carmody to the Rams’ 11, and on the next play In ge boot-legged right to score. When Mullen added the extra point Elon had reduced the lead to only two. On Wmston-Salems next posses sion Elon’s defense flexed their muscle again and had the Rams stopped with a fourth down and four on the WSS 24. But what looked like an apparent block of punter Dave Hamlin’s attempt turn ed into a 44-yard gain as he pitch ed the ball out to Graves who car- Game notes. But by the time the rustiness of the offensive unit wore off, the Christians found themselves down by a 21-0 margin on “big plays” by the Rams. Wmston-Salem State scored on runs of40,28, and 11 yards and the rout appeared to be on. But with five minutes remaining in the first half, Elon’s offense, dor mant for most of the game, came alive. Flanker Jimmy Jones scored on a reverse from 41 yards out with 1:06 left to cap a nine-play, 70 yard j dfive to cu| the deficit to 21-7.^ After; the ensuing kickoff, d^psive back ^ Christian;^ 29:40 ried it to the Elon 32.
