I’m not retiring from my grandfather’s church.” Eure said that his grandparents on both sides of his family were strong supporters of the Christian Church which founded Elon Col lege. Eure said he has seen all the other members of the board join in his 47 years of service, and his decisions have not been challeng ed by any board member. “I have driven over 30,000 miles to come to this campus for the Board of Trustees.” Fred Young, president of Elon College, praised Eure’s leadership and expressed regret that Eure is retiring. “Mr. Eure’s retirement will be a great loss to Elon college. During his 34 years as chairman— a time of unprecedented growth and progress—there has been almost complete harmony on the Elon board. This stability alone is testimony to his character and in- L Photo by Pat Hobin tegrity, to his effectiveness as a leader, and to the selfless nature of his service,” Young said. Young said that Eure represents the college’s stability of leadership. In the last 55 years, Elong has had only one other chairman of the board and three presidents.
