The Chronicle reports, ‘in the late 1970’s and early I980’s, there seemed to be a tendency on the part of many blacks to feel it was more advantageous to go to a historically white school. Now some blacks are realizing an education at a historically black school may be more enriching for them.” That statement was made by Benny Mayfield, dean of enroll ment management at South Carol ing Stale College, a public schwl. This brings up another reason why black enrollment Is down at Elon. The cost of education is a ris ing tide that has no thoughts on subsiding. It is even more difficult to pay for a private college educal- tion. Most black institutions, public or private, cost less than traditional white colleges.
