The Pendulum February 9, 1989 Features page 3 Search for love not limited to Valentine’s Day by Kathy Meadows Editor You’re sitting in your favorite night club wiien suddenly, you turn your attention to the door. There he IS...tall, dark, and absolutely gorgeous! “I think I’m in love!” Does true love miraculously ap pear when you least expect it, or is it something you have to work for? Nobody really knows. But many people describe ideal love as love that is everlasting; love of the highest perfection. Love has been expressed in a variety of ways for centuries, with poetiy being one of the most fre quently used methods. One of the rnost famous lines comes from Elizabeth Barrett Browning the Wrote, “How do I loVe thee, let me count the ways,” to her husband, Robert Browning who returned his sentiments in a similar fashion. In today’s society, poetry is most popular on greeting cards. Personal Touch and Between You And Me are just two of the dozens of lines of cards that express love to friends and family as well as sweethearts. But today’s most thought of literature written about ideal love are books such as the Harlequin Romance series. people, they continue to read the stories because it makes them hap- py- Love can also be found on televi sion and in the movie theater, but they aren’t always so perfect. The soap operas are a classic example. For instance, Guiding Light's Josh and Reva. They’ve been sweethearts since they were teenagers, but they’ve never been able to stay together. They’ve suf fered through Reva’s marriages to Josh’s father and brother; not to mention all the other men in Reva’s life. Now, they’ve just been through a court trial where Josh was con victed of attempted murder. Will it ever be over? As for cinema, the most thought- of romance is the one between Oliver and Jenny in Love Story’ and its sequel, Oliver's Story. In Love Story, Oliver and Jenny had the ideal love until Jenny’s death. Oliver’s Story opens with the funeral procession to the cemetery, The stories are usually along the idea of a couple meeting, falling in love, having a fight, and finding their love again. Much like our fan tasies, the characters often ex perience the ultimate love. Although this is unrealistic to most then goes on to tell how Oliver deals with the loss of his love. Though the story is a tear-jerker, viewers enjoy the movie because of the wonderful relationship between the two characters. Of course, every love story has its own love theme, which is often used by music fans to express feel ings. Many of today’s songs deal with the subject of love. Top 40 songs such as Chicago’s Look Away and Sheriffs When I’m With You are two examples. Look Away talks about still caring for someone after a break-up while Sheriff sings about how great that special so meone makes him feel. But the question still remains - where do I find love? Who knows, it could be right under your nose. Lines WlTVif/ $vZOh/6(TotJ- Elizabeth, Faith;; Sharon, and Suzi, Happy Valentine’s Day. I will niiss all of you next year.
