This has become the slogan for ihe course originally designed to help freshmen in iheir transition from high school to college. As an extension of academic advising, this course allows an opportunity for advisors and advisees to see each other weekly, giving the new students the extra attention they need. The course is taught during the fall semester for one credit. Although it’s not a required course, it has grown throughout the years. During its first year in 1983, Elon 101 consisted of 10 sections leaching a total of 150 students. Since then, the sections have increased to 40 with approximately 700 students. Both faculty and administrative staff volunteer to teach the Elon 101 sections from year to year. In the past, staff members have included President Fred Young; Mark Albertson, the registrar; and Ron Klepcyk, Dean of Student Affairs. The newest thing added to the program is co-teaching with a student. This year there are six sections with student co-teachers. Co-teaching allows the faculty and administrative staff tc see students in a mature setting. The students are seated as equals by the staff members and get to sec things from a teacher's point of view. In some cases, the co- teachers help plan the class activities for the sessions. Sophomore Ted Toomer had negative feelings about accepting a position as a co-teacher when he was first approachrd by Anne Cassebaum. "I thought it would be too time-consuming." After finding out all the details, Toomer changed his mind and ■gladly accepted the role. So far tliis semester, Toomer is enjoying his Elon 101 class and the lime he spends with them. Toomer feels that he has gotten a let from this opportunity. "I’ve gotten a chance to meet new people and interact willi faculty members on a different level." Wake up with 89.3, WSOE by Ellen Reamy Starr Writer No, it's not coffee or a balanced breakfast, but it is what students are waking up to every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings. WSOE, Elon's radio station, now has a new morning show. The program airs between 7-9 am. "We help people get up in the morning and face anollier day of classes," said sophomore disc •ockey Jamie Siler. The morning show format consists of music from the top 40 music journal, news briefs, and interesting U"ivia. "We're there for fun and to inform listeners around the school," said Matt Warner. "We all love radio so much we’re all crazy enough to be down at the radio station at 6:45 in the morning." Amber Fritz, the only female morning announcer, provides the entertainment and weather forecasts. By , joining the transition from high school to college more realistic. Elon 101 students seem to relate more to Uie co-teachers because they have experienced the same things. , The classes focus around any problems the new students may have during their stay at Elon. Such topics as pre-registration, student government, Greek life, academics, and the study abroad programs are discussed. Some students find it a lot easier to adjust to college life than others. Jim Drummond teaches one of five groups of Leadership Fellows in his spccial Elon 101 class. He said that the students are extremely positive and well-prepared. But like other students, the Leadership Fellows also have questions concerning some of Elon’s policies and other programs. Drummond handles his class in a somewhat different way. Instead of leaching, he lets his students, in pairs, present different topics of concern to the class. "I prefer the hands-on experience as opposed to regular leaching." Each section of Elon 101 has a certain uniqueness involved willi each teacher, and in some cases, ihe co-teachers as well. It has been suggested in tlie past lliat the coursc be extended to one year rather than just one semester. With all of the positive feedback received from students and faculty alike, tlie future of Elon 101 looks brighter than ever. morning crew. Amber feels that the time she puts in at WSOE will benefit her future career in broadcasting. "The only thing I want to get out of it is experience," staled Amber. According to Malt, the purpose of ihe WSOE morning show is to be funny, topical, and to keep everyone informed, not just entertained. He hopes that the morning show will become a standard and that all students will have their clock radios set to 89.3 FM. ARE YOUR DRINKING BUDDIES THINKING BUDDIES?
