Fire disrupts students' lives By Mindy Schneeberger The Pendulum Chip Lupo has had a really bad week. While other students may be struggling to study for tests, get up in time for class, or find the right thing to wear for Homecoming, Lupo is dealing with something much worse. On Thursday, October 19, his apartment caught on fire. Since then, he's been trying to cope as best he can. Lupo was in The Pendulum office when he heard the sirens go by. The sports editor says he thought to himself, "Yeah, they're probably going to my place." Ironically enough, he was right. Lupo left the office around 3 p.m. When he got home, he saw people standing in the yard behind the house that served as a residence for Lupo, his roommate. Will Monahan, and five others. "The smoke was just coming out of the top of the roof." "It didn't hit me so hard until I went to the front of the house. You see your entire bedroom This residence, located at 301 Haggard Avenue, has been abandonned since the fire. reduced to ashes. I just kind of lost it then." Lupo was allowed back into his apartment about 90 minutes later. He and the other residents gathered a few belongings and went to find places to stay that night. Lupo didn't have much to gather, though. "I lost all my clothes, my bed, my blankets and pillows, and $175 in cash." The cash was supposed to pay his rent. Lupo says his landlord, Richard Parker Police still searching for Cannon sculpture of B.C. Parker Agency, will probably pro-rate the amount of rent he owed for the month. "Presently he's working on getting us another apartment to stay in," says Lupo, who will wait for a few more days before he begins searching on his own. Everybody who lived in the house, which consists of four individual apartments, ^'as been evacuated. Lupo thinks the entire structure, located at 301 Haggard Sec Fire, Page 12 By Michele Rowe The Pendulum A bust of former Raleigh mayor Isabella Cannon was stolen last Thursday night after 9 p.m. and was not discovered missing until 8 a.m. Friday. The bust was taken off the wooden pedestal in the Isabella Cannon room in the Fine Arts building. Pat Kinney, director of publications and public information, said the English honor society had a dinner in the room that night and ARA cleaned up afterwards. It was believed that someone left the door to the Isabella Cannon room unlocked, but Terry Creech, head of campus security, believes it might be someone with a key. Kinney said a lot of keys were distributed when the Fine Arts Building was first opened. When it was discovered that too many keys had been given out the locks to the outside doors were changed. Ray Johnson, a communications professor, thinks security should spend longer periods of time in the Bust of Isabella Cannon building at night. "Obviously I have a great deal of concern for security because we have all of this TV equipment down here," Johnson said. Johnson also thinks that better quality locks need to be put on the doors. Dan Ingle, chief of policc, and Creech both said they are investigating the case.
